If life is so good abroad why do ex-pats spend all their time worrying about the UK on forums and other social media?
Europe's borders are not permanent and have always shifted through time. So many people in the west supported independence movements when they happened in Eastern Europe - they recognized the unilateral independence declarations of Slovenia and Croatia without a second thought about any existing constitution in the ex Yugoslavia, nore did many in the west object to the breakup of the USSR. Why should it be different now that separatism is getting closer to home ?
Partly because of homesickness. Partly because they think that the place that they left should always remain as they left it. Partly because they often still have British nationality and are thus directly affected by everything which Britain does. Partly because, being located abroad, they would like to be able to be proud of their country - but can't be. Partly because (like me) they have little other contact to their native language and so coming on such forums establishes a contact with the homeland, and language. Are these enough reasons or do you want more ?
...and a big partly because when their health fades they want to make sure there’s a decent service available in the UK for when they call time on their 30 years in the sunshine; a service into which they’ve presumably paid sod all into over this period? Cynical? Moi?
Something of an over generalization there. I have been paying into the German health system for 28 years and am safer there in later life than I would be back in England. I am also not 'in the sunshine' - unfortunately
Spot on. Catalonia is very wealthy, can you see the reasons why Spain doesn't want to give it independence?
Some good answers there CH. I have a house in France and have French family and I have lived abroad but I still believe this country is the best in the World (okay it has its faults). The reason I have mentioned this was because I saw something on the BBC with ex-pats (in Spain) complaining about Brexit and (other things here), then I thought that they were only worried about health and benefits that they could lose out on while they sun it up.
Well not sure it's all their time but i agree there are some daft ones out there Maybe there are more English people also on forums moaning ... it's part of the reason I come on here but largely its because of the football There is definitely a culture around all social media: Moan if its a forum possibly a great place to do so and relief to actually type out your frustrations indicate Facebook and Twitter etc are all about lies IMO and I believe the main thing there is to promote your own digital fingerprint as it's always a positive one to your audience ... Imagine if 15 years ago you travels and knocked on one of your friends front doors say 3am in the morning before presenting them a polaroid picture of a cake you have just eaten. To this i often laugh when i hear things have gone sour with a battle of one of these streams of social media as they are conditioned to be happy places
FFS don’t keep on of course I am why do you think I am on here at the moment. It’s the best therapy No it’s not I completely disagree with myself but come to think of it I do have a point. I blame EasyJet ****ing orange muppets always late
Barcelona's players and staff will join a strike called across Catalonia on Tuesday in protest at a violent crackdown by police of an independence referendum in the region on Sunday.
