Who exactly is this "jet-setting, cosmopolitan elite"? I've always wondered who it is I should be hating and opposing and don't really understand who they are or why.

The only jet-setters I know are people like Rupert Murdoch, Viscount Rothmere or similar - the ones who want us to hate foreigners and cut the links to organisations that stop them getting their own way. It can't be them, so who is it?

Maybe. But that may not get us the result we want once we have it. Many of the companies employing EU foreigners say that Brits don't apply for their jobs. Agricultural pickers is one example that comes to mind. If we lose the foreign workforce, then that may not change. If the companies put up wages and that attracts Brits, then the cost base for the company will change and they'll have to put up prices. The consumer (in this global world) will vote with their money and buy cheaper products from abroad, where labour costs are far less. So, in the end, the only effect might be the closure of British businesses and the marketplace buying from abroad.

Everyone seems to agree now that there will be a short-to-medium downturn in prosperity for ordinary people as a result of Brexit, so they probably won't be able to afford to "buy British" when there is a cheaper alternative.

There seem to be some jobs that locals feel is beneath them, Kiwi. That's true for NZ as well. My brother-in-law once started a cleaning business in Hamilton which focused on cleaning airport offices and schools. No Kiwi ever applied to work for him, only foreigners. His competitors found the same thing to be true. The customers dictated what they'd pay for cleaning services by choosing the cheapest supplier, so wages were depressed as a result.

Some jobs have a training lead time, too. If our EU nursing staff went back home, we'd need 3 years to train replacements - assuming there were British people who were good enough and motivated enough to want to be a nurse. And the question is why aren't they nursing already, then?

We cannot take in a city the size of Birmingham every two years.

The workers left behind don't need the jobs, unemployment is at an historic low. Perhaps wages will go up though, but what's holding those back is economic uncertainty, low graowth and productivity, and public sector pay policy.

We have certainly not reached the end of the line on this, Merkel is indeed totally responsible for Brexit and here's why:

We are jealous that she has overseen an unprecendented period of consistent prosperity for virtually ALL Germans - not the elitist few.
We are jealous that she is supremely competent at her job compared to the complete arseholes that we in the UK have.
We are jealous of the fact that she makes decision based on long term TCO and TVO rather than the comfort the turn of a pillow provides.
I wouldn't want to be a member of a club where I'm consistently made to look like a poor relation.

She also understands that the EU needs a shake up - if anyone will deliver that it will be her.
