Ok - what she did, or to be more precise, agreed to have done to her, only cost a £1.

I think we are talking about a different Mary Whitehouse. A woman by that name was sold at a market in Birmingham, apparently the first recorded case of wife selling in England in 1733. Although the practice was illegal a blind eye was turned to it because divorce was so expensive and often not possible. A case of this comes into Hardy's novel 'The Mayor of Casterbridge'.

I think it's Henrik Larsson - watching the Man U game made me remember he had a loan spell there after scoring all those goals for Celtic

No, but it's her successor, Heather Knight. I'll give it to you as you had the right sport and gender. I should probably asked which current England captain.

Marie Curie? She attended as Higher Education in Poland at the time was restricted - if not actually made illegal - by the Russians in charge. Flying universities were set up in private houses to run 'secret' courses.

When England went out of the world Cup on penalties (no surprise there then) and 1120000 people went to make a cup of tea as Waddle's penalty kick disappeared into the sky

Near enough - when they unsurprisingly went out because of that penalty miss, the spike in power usage was the equivalent of the effect of 1,120,000 being switched on at the same time.
    Over to you.:)
