I have been following Sunderland long enough to know they always build you up ( last season anyone?) and then knock you back down. Sad but true.
I share Syd's optimism but let's see where we are in the New Year... and after three points on Saturday!

Think we will improve again Syd. Top 6 not doable for me though (yet!!) Man Utd, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs.

7th spot is up for grabs, Everton have done nothing in the window and appear to have little scope to do so, and I think we could top them.

Others in the mix Fulham, Everton, Stoke, Villa

I think Stoke could well be the surprise team this season

Well, I cant see Everton doing it again, yes they seem to be up there every season, but the bubble has to burst soon, they are not that good.

Liverpool are too inconsistent, but i do see them above us.

Spurs, not a clue they havnt bought anyone "yet" and if Modric does go, they may not be the force many think them to be, I still think they will finish above us, but maybe below Liverpool.

I think we can match Everton and Villa and a couple of seasons ago they were the yardsticks for us to catch, and I think we can, or at least I cant see why not.

We need to pick up points against the lesser clubs though, too many times we get a great result against a top team, only to blow it the week after.

Dont say that! Don`t you know who we are playing next.

The thing is lads, if it was as simple as saying the top 6 will be...... then whats the point in playing the games. I think one of the top teams will slip this year, Arsenal and Spurs have their problems and Liverpool are not the finished article yet. Chelsea also have an ageing squad and a new manager. Nothing is ever as people predict. I firmly believe we will sign 2 more quality players and that's what my prediction is based on

Chapaz, remember I was very realistic in a previous thread re: the Newcastle squad and defended what you had said, so you know I am realistic and not too biased.

Perhaps, but the simple fact is that the teams you think you'll finish above have some £20-30million players at their disposal. Some of the best talents not only in the UK, but also in Europe. Apart from just a few of our star players, most players from Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool would walk into both our starting 11's.

They're just too high a level, and you guys would need some drastic changes to get up that far. As would we.

After wtaching Arsenal last night, I don't think there were many of their players who would WALK into either team. They were crap.

It depends who Wenger signs? and if they settle. It also depends on up coming results. Arsenal have 3 very hard games coming up, if they lose all 3 Wenger could be for the chop and then you never know what might happen. I don't think many of the Spuds would walk into our side, VDV and Bale but after that?

Every team has off days man and doesn't play at 100%. If that wasn't the case, then every top 8 team would batter every lower team without fail.

Although, they were crap largely down to Newcastle. Our defence was rock solid, and if it wasn't, Gervinho and RVP would have been all over us like mad. They tried to get through time after time, but they couldn't. If one team plays really well, it makes the other team look poorer on the day.

Well I'l go to the bottom of our garden, Arenal where crap because the mighty Newcastle played so well, what a ****ing complete arsehole you are.

haha well said mate, i love his opinions it was only yesterday he was saying he struggles to see why were so optimistic, yet he thinks newcastle will finish higher then us, even tho we have added a load of premiership experience to are side that finished above them last season..
the kids just ****ing silly

<laugh> Stop acting like a 12 year old you grumpy twat. Christ <doh>

It's obvious man. If a team has a strong defence and midfield on the day, it will disrupt the oppositions play, and as a result, they won't play as well as they could. The players work together to keep possession, close down attackers and minimise opportunities, so of course the opposition won't look as good.

Our defence on the day was solid (whether it stays that way remains to be seen), and as a result, RVP, Gervinho and Arshavin couldn't break through, couldn't find many chances and didn't get much time on the ball, so their attack didn't look up to much. If we'd sat back and let them hammer in 6 goals, I'm sure their attack would have looked ****ing amazing. What's so hard to understand about that?

It's much in the same way Liverpool didn't look at their best because Sunderland disrupted their play.

'Premiership experience' has nothing to do with how good a player is or how much he will add to the quality of the squad, but you're one of the stupidest people I've ever spoken to on this board, so I guess you won't understand that.

did someone just fart??

I watched the match on ESPN and in all honesty both teams were dire Arshavin was crap, RVP wasnt much better, but IMO they were crap just because they were crap on the day, 1st game of the season, away from home, just never really showed up, and got frustrated, Gervinho was out on the left/right most of the game, when he got in good positions, which he did on numerous occasions, he messed the ball up into the box, or there was no Arsenal player in sight.

I agree. Arsenal played far from their best I have to say. So did we. However, our defence was great on the day, so any threats from Arsenal (and there were a fair few) were nullified rather quickly.

It was a mixture of both. Good play from us, but Arsenal weren't exactly on top form themselves.

Much better to get players who are much better than the oppositions players in how well they can play football.

Regardless of their Premier League experience, they're still capable of playing bloody well. That's my main priority.

After watching both matches live, I would say you have a lot more to worry about from us, than vice versa.

But, even if you had won 6-0 and we had got beat 6-0, it wouldnt mean anything for the derby coming up, its a clean slate and a free for all, I am starting to brick it now.
