A man accused of attacking the Celtic manager Neil Lennon during a game against Hearts in Edinburgh last May has appeared at court.

John Wilson, 26, is accused of assault and breach of the peace, both of which are aggravated by religious prejudice.

It is claimed that during the Tynecastle stadium match he lunged at the Celtic manager, grabbed him around the neck and made a sectarian remark.

Mr Wilson pleaded not guilty and will face trial on 29 August.

The case is due to be heard at Edinburgh Sheriff Court.

it was the way he kicked that water bottle your honour. I really thought he may do the bottle serious damage and felt the need to intervene

It appears this gentleman is going to use the pleading eyes technique
This technique was for the first time tried successfully by Boogie
as he was been dismissed by a reckless referee who dared to
send off Rangers players. The pleading eyes won over the administrators
of justice in Scottish Football and will probably work in the courts as well.

In all seriousness, he has pleaded not guilty to a specific charge. He may not be guilty of that charge.

Neil Lennon was standing in a menacing manner, staring aggressively at the pitch, his teeth bared and his ginger hair seeming to be aflame in rage. The defendant was sure that Mr Lennon was about to run on to the pitch and attack the referee (his friend Medro told him so) and therefore he had no choice but to try and wrestle the Celtic manager to the ground.

It is expected that Mr Lennon will be charged under the new sectarian law of "Bringing it upon oneself by being born a Catholic in Northern Ireland."

    The case continues tomorrow.

that reminds me, if the religiously aggravated part of the charge is dropped (is there any evidence to support the charge that can be proven in court?) then I wonder what pinnochmedro will have to say about it? I shall be a very interested observer on that one.....

It will be very hard to prove that charge.

Just noticed the extra bits on the charges <doh>

If they've charged him with that I trust they believe there is enough evidence to find him guilty or they wouldn't have added it.

Hoping that he would plead guilty imo, then they'd not have to prove anything at all.
