The £1.2m is probably a lot closer to his current value, given our situation now. That, plus the savings on his wages, would probably be enough to cover the cost of our 3 signings so far and could also help towards Ragett from Lincoln and Beilik on loan from Arsenal. Given that Vrancic, who is two years younger than Dorrans, is a ready made replacement a deal now seems likely. Dorrans was a boyhood fan of Rangers and has discussed the possible move with Naismith.

In other news, Jacob Murphy scored a brace in the U21s 3-0 win against Iceland in a friendly. Not sure whether Angus Gunn was in goal.

From today's helping of MFW re the imminent Angus Gunn and the rest of the squad (2 weeks tomorrow!!!) - 'But I was wrong, and on June 26, Angus will be back on familiar turf, ready to embark on his first full season in a first-team jersey. It’s difficult to see what’s not to like:
- England Under-21 keeper ✔
- Highly rated at Man City ✔
- A ‘big unit’ ✔'
So for those hoping to see Rudd given a chance as our No 1, it really doesn't seem likely.
I loved this comment about the MD of our East Anglian rivals - "I’ll desist from the hatchet job I originally intended (Mr Milne has made a good job of that without any help), other to perhaps question his use of the phrase ‘worked well’ and suggest, if he’s not done so already, that he dines out with Messrs Wilkins and Brazil in the Dinosaur Club."

Pink'un saying we'd consider selling him to save wages, personally I think that would be a mistake.

Whilst he'll be 31 when the season starts, he's 100% proven at this level, and will score goals next season. I'd rather see Oliveira be the main man next season, but Jerome definitely has a lot to offer, and our rivals would definitely benefit from him signing.

For me, it'd need to be a fairly silly bid to entertain selling him. Oliveira and Jerome, with currently Naismith/Wildschut/Watkins as backup strikers is plenty. We can afford to sell Naismith or Wildschut to save wages without needing to replace them, but I wouldn't be comfortable selling Jerome without another striker coming in. Given Jerome's record, it'd need to be £8m+ before I think it's worth the gamble of replacing him.

I totally agree, DH. I fail to see why we'd dismantle an attack that made us joint highest scorers in the Championship last season. Jerome was our highest scorer last season and, especially in away games, a very effective striker. Without his goals last season we'd have ended up mid-table or below. If this is true, then SW and DF are taking a huge risk with fan approval. If we start the season slowly and fail to score many goals, things could turn septic very quickly. Bring in another striker from the lower leagues here or in Germany by all means, but not at the expense of Jerome. I'd certainly lower my expectations about next season if we did that.

Boro wanted him last season and the season before I think. I don't see any point in selling him unless they bid up 10-12 Million or something. Then there would be a discussion. I'm guessing we would sell him for about 2-3 Million.
 
If his wages need to be trimmed for the greater good of the squad then so be it, he's getting old for a high energy all action player, if we can get a few mill for a decent replacement so be it. We all curse his wasteful finishing, hopefully SW can unearth a younger prospect, though i could see it being a loanee to support Nelson.
If it is to be a rival then we need to screw as much out of them as humanly possible.
I like Jerome but no one is irreplaceable and I'd rather it were him than Nelson moving on.

I've just picked up the discussion on CJ, as I was out last night and I wouldn't mind seeing him sold for a reasonable fee, but preferably not to one of the relegated teams. Yes Rick I know we disagree on him, but for me, his miss rate is just too high and had Basil not got his stupid sending off (which cost us promotion!!!), then I'm sure he would have ended up with many more goals. Yes, we were the highest scoring team in the Championship, but lots of goals came from midfield players - AP in particular (once he actually started games!!)
I'd be VERY surprised if Basil isn't our first choice striker and I expect Morris to be a regular part of the squad as well.

I expect you're right that Oliveira will be a very important player for us next season and whilst I don't want to reignite the arguement over who should be first choice Jerome or Oliveira I am still of the view that assuming both stayed then Jerome would get the most appearances and goals mainly because if we play one up front Jerome is the obvious choice and if we play 2 up front then I can't envisage Jerome not being one of the 2 as the best option in most games.

Anyway the point of my post was to question why we would sell Jerome at all (irrespective of whether he's first or second choice) and if we did I'd have the following concerns

1) How much money would we actually get, I can't see us getting much more than 3m. I accept the reduction to the wage bill would be significant.

2) Other than Oliveira we have no out & out strikers that are good enough at this level in general and particularly if we are going to play 1 up front.

3) To just have Oliveira and a couple of youth strikers would be suicidal. What would happen if Oliveira got injured in the first game and was written of for the season or alternatively Oliveira lets his emotions get the better of him and misses games due to cards received . Jerome very rarely gets injured and does not get that many cards considering his combative style.

4) If Jerome went we would have to buy at least one proven championship quality striker in addition to the third striker we would need if he stays. What sort of quality striker would we get for our money?

5) The most likely clubs to want him are almost certainly going to be our competitors for promotion. To sell him I think could be the biggest own goal since last weeks election.

I think £2-3m is about right, but that and any saving on his wages would have to go on a new player to replace him. Who are we likely to get for that kind of money? In his two Championship seasons with us he's scored 18 goals in 41 appearances and 16 in 40 appearances with 7 assists this year. Any new striker could turn out to be a reduced price RvW and we end up mid-table or below while Jerome is scoring 16 goals for one of our rivals. Also, what happens if Oliveira has a serious injury and the new striker doesn't come up to scratch? I understand that savings have to be made, but SW said when he came in that little needed to be done about the attack which had been a success area. If CJ is sold, the new regime will certainly lose my support.

Good Lord I've lambasted the Board for years as you all know but I'm right behind what they're trying to do here.

The transfer window isn't open yet so I would suggest less pant-wetting, let's just wait and see where we are when pre-season starts shall we :emoticon-0105-wink:

I've just read your replies canario (the 'own goal analogy' was brilliant!!!) and Rick for Jerome to stay and I think on reading them, I'm inclined to change my opinion.
Basil could easily get another red for being impetuous (I hope not!!) and he was injured for several weeks), so unless we're going to sign the next 'Vardy/Holt; I'd rather we didn't sell Jerome.
Some interesting times and decisions ahead for our new management structure.

I thought we'd given up cheap shots like 'pant-wetting', but it appears not. I've supported the new structure from the beginning and I'm hopeful about Farke as the HC for reasons like those Supers set out, but there is also an element of risk-management involved in any overhaul of a squad. I can understand the release of the 7 out of contract players to save wages and the sale of Dorrans to Rangers for £1m+ also makes sense with Vrancic coming in to replace him at a considerable savings overall. The other two new signings also make sense to me, but there's never any guarantee that new players will succeed, so that's a risk for a start. If we sell Howson as well, the risk of failure increases dramatically, but at least if he went to Burnley the move wouldn't be to a competitor. Selling Jerome to Boro or Sunderland as well for an unknown player as a replacement would very much be a risk too far, IMO. It's significant that Supers and others are now adding the proviso that the new structure may take take more than a year to work (as it did at Huddersfield). If that happens, our chances of ever reaching the PL again would become very slim indeed.
