It was not meant to be a sentence...were the IRA at war with the British government while they were part of the EU, simple enough question?

Yes , Ireland joined the EU in 1973 it was the EEC back then and Britain joined it the same year.

I don't know who that backs but yes there was a war in the E.U. From 1973-1997.
