Think you are spot on but i dont think it is managable they way things currently stand.
The main arguments against technology are usually time, which i think is a none sensical argument as players and mangers argue for mins anyway
And then they say the game would become too clean?
I would rather be discussing tactics etc on talk shows than constantly berating refs - who tbf have a terribly difficult job.
No station keeps replaying a right decision and pointing out what a good decision that was.
I agree that refs have a difficult job partly because the pace of the game has increased so much but in the Rashford incident the
ref was so far away and his view was so obstructed by other players he couldn't even see the incident properly. For that reason
alone it shouldn't have been given.

I've always been a bit of a Luddite when it comes to tech in the game, but I'm coming round to it. I wouldn't like to see the free-flowing nature of the game slowed by it, but some things to help the ref wouldn't be bad.
I think a lot of the resistance to it amongst the establishment is that traditionally the attitude was that the ref is the sole man in charge, and that having people countermanding his decisions would be seen as undermining his authority. I'm not saying I agree with this, but I think it may be the reason that they drag their feet so much over it.

I didn't say nobody ever did it in the past, but it wasn't as rife, or as blatant, as it is today. Diving is a phenomenon that really took off in the 80's and now seems to be an accepted part of the game to the extent that youngsters playing the game will see it as a necessary strategy.
Imo, dishonesty should never be encouraged, and the "win at any cost" philosophy leaves me cold.
I wasn't getting into the "English versus foreigners" debate, btw - commentators have always been horribly biased in that way throughout my lifetime of watching the game. Even more so in the past than they are now.
Fair enough

I am not sure though that there is ever going to be a time that win at any cost is not prevallent, generally the ons with that attitude will become the winners.

How many players had the nickname, 'chopper', this wasnt because they were fair players, the stories normally associated with Choppers will go along the lines of, 'id give im one when the ref wasnt lookin to put im in is place for rest of game'.
For a long time this was accepted, then they used the laws of the game and cameras, which were new technology to tighten the laws up.
Which is where i think we are at now.

I would love to see all cheating removed. What you said above is the only way to do it- i just dont think they will :embarrassed:

Tbf there is a mute button which i could use on the tv but for some reason i listen to the pundits then get annoyed with them <laugh>

Rightly or wrongly, I think old school fans tend to think of hard tackling as an "honest" aspect of the game whereas cheating is just snide.
I'm not one of those who just long for the good old days - I think there are many ways in which the game has improved and many ways in which it has worsened. The widespread acceptance of cheating is one of the latter for me.
As for pundits, I usually mute the half-time discussions and switch off after the game because I can't be arsed with their opinions. Having been a top player doesn't necessarily qualify you to be an insightful observer.

Anyway, mate -I have to go and do something useful, so I'll leave you to go back to thinking of all the ways we can **** up tonight. <ok> :)

Diving wouldn't be such a problem if refs weren't pathetic cowards.

Sometimes you can have sympathy because players try to cheat them, but then things like yesterday's decision wipe all that away.

Their own guidelines say they need to be sure to give a decision, but there was no chance they were sure yesterday, even with the faking, because they couldn't even see and just guessed.

They need to accept they guess in favour of some teams and against others and sort their own lives out. Usually they guess in favour of bigger or home teams, but it's also blatantly obvious when they decide the home crowd has annoyed them and they won't give a thing.

This season has been a total [HASHTAG]#joke[/HASHTAG] for [HASHTAG]#consistency[/HASHTAG]

IMO referees should be banned from calling themselves "professionals" until they appoint independent assessors to judge their performances.

Spurs might not be challenging Chelsea for the title but their fans are challenging for the most scum. Putting someone in hospital last week and now more violence and racism. At least West Ham fans attack each other.

If video technology can be used, great.....otherwise Retrospective punishment is the answer.

Currently, the ref has a split second to decide what is or isn't a penalty. Quite often it cannot even be agreed update upon by a panel of ex pro's so let's help them.

I'd make cheating like this a straight red card offence (ie an automatic 3 match ban). I'd also back that up with a post match retrospective action in the case a ref got conned.

Getting the odd card for diving is not enough of a deterrent for the cheats.

Who decides he was cheating though
You clearly think he was cheating - I am not saying I agree with this just playing devils advocate but surely Rashford can make a defence for what he did. Had the goalie followed through and not pulled his arms back he would have cleaned rashford out. You can't expect a human who thinks that is going to happen not to jump/dive at that moment.
The one thing most could agree on is that a replay would have shown that it was not a penalty within moments
Radhfords actions could have been placed on report to be discussed after the match

Did you see him wave for a foul?
Not all fouls are a dive regardless of what old ex-pros say. Some of them fell over too you know.
there was no foul instead Rashford decided to slump to the floor in anticipation of something that never occurred .
PS. And no he would not have got his ankle broken if he hadn't dived despite the crap being spouted on your matchday thread.

I'm going to be consistent here and say remember Suarez against Villa a few seasons back? Same argument about pulling hands away but catching with the knees.

I think the fact he flicked his leg out to catch the goalie after flicking the ball out to the left would be the evidence to point at him going looking for the pen
That said can't blame him for doing that and also as I have just said human reaction is to get out the way of oncoming obstacle.
It is really difficult tbf

f
he didn't though in fact he practically knelt down to try and ensure there was contact.

PS The Sane one was even worse & how that was ever given is beyond any reasonable explanation .

I don't think anyone thinks it is easy but he was practically falling before he reached the goalkeeper. Maybe managers should be able to challenge decisions
in real time like they do in American Football. It wouldn't catch all the cheating but would eliminate the obvious mistakes. It would be a start.

IMO I've seen refs give pens when a play loses the chance cos he hurdles the keeper and seen them not given.

So... if you are a player with that scenario you dangle a leg and make damned sure the ref has enough to give it.

I agree video replay would help greatly to improve consistency of decision making... but pros will need to stop dangling body parts

Suarez was excellent at conning refs..just like Young of Utd...make the punishment harsher and it goes away. Simple. Personally, I'd hate it and it is not specific to a single club....although some coaches tend to coach their players in the dark arts better than others.

I still wish Couthino had gone down when tripped in the box last week mind. It was clear contact and his honesty cost us.....it still should have been a pen. As some say one here, these are fine lines!!

I agree.

you have to go your job you are paid 180k pr week and if that means falling over cos refs are that bad then you do it.

we can whine about it all we like but in the end it is part of the game until the game takes action, real action to get rid of it.

COutinho however got a clear shot on target so it was a fair ref call. had he fell over sure it would be better chance but he should still have scored
