Nee where better on a Saturday afternoon mate Few beers in the town, stop off in the Navy Club for a few more, get in the ground and piss yersell away in that piss torrent they used to call a bog. Then burn ya gob off at half time with a nuclear pie.
The newest estate DOWNHILL between Red House and Town End Farm, like all the other estates throughout Sunderland had its own Workmans Club. This was the best club in that area at the time, for turns etc and was a must for a Sunday dinner time session (large bingo payouts),the place was always heaving. Strange thing was that living in Hylton Castle we used to have to gan UP the Downhill!!!!
They were anarl comm, sadly I think that has gone aswell. There used to be a shop on the green in southwick, then one in Bridges.I am pretty sure that they are no longer there. Can remember them coming round Hylton castle in their blue van selling hot pies and peas.I can just smell and taste them now
We used to come out of Ncstl Rd baths and go to Maws Pies just further down the road, we used to get a broken pie and a bag of peas and gravy, ****ing lush mate.
I'll never forget them bogs, or bunking ower the wall to get in. Me and my mate went to the Boro match and actually paid to get in this time and were stood in the queue, my mates got thick curly ginger hair. Well can you remember those massive police horses that used to patrol the queues? we were stood in the queue and this horse started chewing his hair FFS
When I started going late 70's I think it was £1.20 in, under 16's. We'd go in there stinking of beer, we'd drink at the Gluepot before the game & the bloke that ran it didn't give a **** we were underage. We caused no bother so he just served us. 40 pence for a pint of Camerons Strongarm & 99p for 20 Gold Mark tabs. I used to go to the match with a tenner & come back with enough change for a pint in the Kings Nut in Stanley, swingers club now, lol. I remember one copper bird who was always on horseback. Chunky bird but sexy you know? Mind she was a right ****, seen her cosh a few lads with her truncheon. Had many a **** over her, lol.
Anyone from TEF remember the mobile non mobile shops. There was Briggsy's van and another not far from there whose name escapes me
Back in the day we used to get lemonade delivered! Lemonade! WTF! Can't remember who from but I think it was a local company. I remember these old guys. Seems a long time ago now.
