    Hi guys,

is anyone else looking at the players other championship teams have been signing and thinking why arent we trying to attract the calibre of these players???

    Carew to west ham
Mills + Michael Johnson to Leicester
    Derbyshire to N Forest

Latest it that Keane could be on his way to leicester too..

forget maynard, rodrigues, ebanks blake etc.
Now we have the AOC cash, lets really invest and try to push on for promotion, lets buy a big name striker and CB to partner Fonte and go for automatic promotion.

List of names id try and loan or buy...

Yakubu - went on loan to leicester last year
Keane - Surpluss to requirments and white hart lane
vela - never plays at arsenal
Macheda - Never going to get in at utd

I trust in NA and NC but would love to see us up there competing come end of the season!!

Yakubu - Definately not, would be earning way more then he's worth
    Keane - As above
Vela - Doubt he would drop a league
    Macheda - As above

Also I don't rate Derbyshire at all and Michael Johnson is over rated. Maynard and Rodriguez would be great signings signalling our intent, don't you think?
We mainly want younger players for our future in the premier league!

not sure i agree with that. IMO the players you listed are of similar calibre to those we already have. They would also be coming in expected a far higher wage than those we already have and although we dont need to watch our spending, massive wage discrepencies make for desruption!

there is no doubt in the championship all of those players would be very successful, look at how well yak did last year on loan at leciester.

5 mil for championship striker in maynard who didntscore over 20 goals seems very over priced, also what has rodrigues done?

i just think we need to push on and should try and attract some bigger experienced players who have produce that flash of brilliance and add the quality of the group we already have.

Are you really saying the players we're looking at signing/have signed aren't of the required caliber? Let me guess, you get your football knowledge from Match of the Day and know nothing outside of Southampton and the Premiership.

We can't do that though, it's not how the structure of the club is. Yakubu + Keane would want high wages, which goes against the wage structure of the club, and they both have massive egos so thats a no. Vela and Macheda are good options, but they won't go down a league. Maynard and Rodriguez are promising and they are proven to score goals in the Championship, which is why they are viable options. Let's not forget we aren't a Leicester or Man city, we only need players that won't disrupt the team spirit with high egos, e.g why we didn't go through with Billy Sharp.

EDIT: Also I dont rate Carew at all anyway, and Matt Derbyshire isn't much better.

I think that would be disastrous! We don't want players with big egos at Saints and it would just destroy the team spirit we have at the moment.

Anyway, I would say Maynard, Rodriguez and Ebanks-Blake are big name strikers?? <doh>

Maynard was injured for 3/4 of last season, still managed 7 goals and helped bristol city avoid relegation.

The players you listed who are joining other clubs will be demanding HUGE wages.

That is not how NC and NA work, they lok for players who will improve the team, and also fit in the with the team ethic well. Not someone who is going to be on 4x the wages of the rest of the squad.

    edit:

Also - who says we weren't in for these players, but the likes of Leicester who are really spending big just outbid us.

If they don't get up this season, they'll be in trouble financially as they have a lot of players on big wages

(Similar to us in 2007, when we made the playoffs, they had gambled on us going up hence all the "big-name" players we had then)

Wasn't it like 2 weeks ago we had one of these 'Why haven't we signed x, y and z' threads?

We're in for Maynard and Rodriguez, two of the most wanted strikers left in this League so what's the problem?!

Only one of the players mentioned I'd take is Michael Johnson. If he stays fit, he's class.

But yeah, can't see your problem really, JayRod and Maynard are both in their early twenties, so plenty of potential, and IMO, they're good enough for a promotion pushing team. Sod the prima donnas like Yakubu.

I sleep easy at night knowing Nigel Adkins is driving our player search and not saints fans on the internet.

Having seen this start of this thread, I am pleased to see CBK hs was more polite response than I might have.

...Matt Derbyshire (has he scored 20 in his carreer?) Carew? :embarrassed:

Free transfers surely? The fact the players we're going for are rated at £3.5m to £5m should tell you something?

Only player there who I would be happy about signing would be Johnson as he is definately prem standard if you can get him fit, and get him interested in playing and not going out all the time.

Those are two big IFs so would much rather be looking at Maynard/SEB/Rodriguez

Isn't Vela going on loan to a club in Spain? I think Sky Sports mentioned it today!
