Matt Smith's first goal for QPR was the 38th of his Football League career
QPR climbed seven points clear of the Championship drop zone as Gianfranco Zola's Birmingham City lost for a ninth time in 14 games since he took charge.
Birmingham-born Matt Smith headed home fellow January signing Luke Freeman's corner to put QPR ahead on 18 minutes.
Conor Washington shot home to double the lead two minutes after the break.
Idrissa Sylla headed a close-range third, then Yeni N'Gbakoto struck a late fourth before Emilio Nsue pulled one back in injury time for Blues.
City's defeat was their heaviest under Zola - and their worst at home since the 8-0 club record defeat by Bournemouth in October 2014, the game before Zola's predecessor Gary Rowett took charge.

According to Sky, we were by far the better side and Birmingham never looked like beating us.
We were fkn great. I'm hoarse. What a game. Very briefly the third goal sums up how far we've come in a short time. I dunno if the highlights above show it that far back but the sheer battling we did to win possession in the first place earned it.
And the support was immense. Sung the whole game. I'm hoping we're seeing the start of something special.

Last season saw Birmingham City stay up thanks to a Paul Caddis equaliser deep into injury time at Bolton Wanderers, sending Doncaster Rovers down on goal difference with both teams on 44 points.
Over the last 10 years, the average points total for 22nd place has been 45.9, with the average for 21st being 49.7 - giving some credence to the notion that 50 points will keep a team up. Only twice in the last 10 years has that not been the case - Peterborough United going down in 2013 with a massive 54 points while Gillingham were relegated in 2005 on goal difference with 50.
If these numbers are accurate, that would suggest Millwall would need to pick up a massive six wins from their remaining 11 games - a tough ask when they have only won seven from their previous 35.
Wigan, trailing behind on 28 points and Blackpool even further back on 22, must be well aware that they are almost certainly relegated barring a comeback from the dead Lazarus would be proud of.
It may turn out that far fewer points are needed; Birmingham City stayed up last year with the lowest total in 10 years on 44 points, although that total would have kept a team up in five of the last 10 seasons.
No doubt all the managers of the clubs in the bottom half of the table will be keeping their fingers crossed until it becomes a mathematical impossibility that their club can be relegated.

Let's do something about this home statistic on Tuesday against Wigan.
Wigan's defence have been much tighter the last couple of matches (only conceding one goal), so let's put a few past them, as we did at Brum today.
As were the recent Burton & Blackburn matches, that we somehow managed to lose, yet another important relegation battle "six pointer" fixture for us.
"Although the Hoops, who climb three places to 16th, have won comfortably more points away from home in the Championship this season (21) than they have at Loftus Road (16), the size of this defeat was still a shock."

mmm... I think we are a long way off from that Shefford. Good result today but need to beat Wigan on Tuesday. For me we are still too inconsistent to make a serious challenge next season. Hollow needs to use the rest of the season to gain some consistency.
