Very, very disappointed.

To lose Fonte with no replacement is insanity. Look what losing Williams did to Swansea's defence. Have to hope VVD's injury heals okay, as really without him our CB pairing leaves a lot to be desired...

We do this every window, though. A lot of them never seem to get adequately replaced, no matter how many windows of not-panicking we go through. And replacing two CBs in the summer, which is rather likely, is going to be a panic.

Though I disagree I feel like you could justifiably levy that at the last two windows, where have we done it prior?

And not necessarily. Not sure getting two good CBs in the summer is much harder than getting one good one in January. The benefit would've been getting one bedded in but getting a worse one in case of emergency I'm not sure is a particularly better prospect. Arguable though.

I think there's a debate to be had about whether we should allow more flexibility to cover short-term problems (Boufal relpacing Mane but coming injured and having AFCON, Virgil injury, additional striker option last window etc.), but I don't think our long-term method of replacing quality is particularly flawed. We might not be able to sustain improvement with our model but we can still benefit from us.

If you add more flexibility in general though, i.e. fill out the bottom of the squad with players who will play likely 5-10% of the season's game time, you don't see players like McQueen, Sims or Stephens.

Failing to add more than loan depth during the two seasons where we were chasing Champions League.

Creating a defensive partnership from whole cloth is a challenge. You get one of those signings wrong, you're in real trouble. Particularly because I'm not convinced that Virgil will be the only defender going if the right bid comes in.

I don't want to buy more average. We have a lot of average. I want to buy more high-end players. With months of prep time we should be aiming to sign good, starting players, rather than messing about trying to sign a third-string CB from the Russian league...and failing at that.

Strange one, Fonte cleary told them he'd be off all season. They had a long time to get a shortlist of a few at least decent cbs for a loan/short term contract. Now in the situation of relying on a youth player which isn't really fair on him (especially at cb as it's not a very forgiving posistion). Oh well, the striker situation in summer was also strange.

Just cos we have a shortlist of players, doesn't mean the players want to join or the clubs want to let them go mid-season. There's only so much planning they can do!

Though I do think its a big, big risk not to sign a CB - alternatively, it could be a positive as VVD might not be out for long.

My dissapointment is purely with Reeds statement on this one. If you publicly state you won't sell a player until a replacement is sorted then surely it makes sense to tie that down before selling - to avoid situations like this. If one couldn't be found, then ultimately we were under no pressure to sell Fonte this window other than him having a slight sulk.

Have a feeling that Andy Carroll will fancy his chances on Saturday. But Yoshida will probably have one of those games where he looks World Class. (Positive thoughts).

Boufal, Tadic, Redmond, Sims, Rodriguez, Long, Gabbiadini. Maybe our tactic has changed to simply outscoring the opponent, like Liverpool!?

He's going on about a demonstration now...
Like most fans, I am dissapointed that we have not signed another CB. However I think it comes down to how desperate you are in January, to where certain players go.
For example, take C Palace. They are paying Sakho all of his wages approx £110,000 per week plus a £2 million loan fee. They are also rumoured to be paying Schlupp over £50,000 per week,(a player who cannot get in relegation threatened Leicester team) which is why Jenkinson turned down their offer of £35,000 per week. Mad money by a desperate club.
We were never going to pay those figures for Sakho, and that is the only reason Liverpool let him go to palace on loan and not a permanent of which they wanted. Imagine the unrest that can cause to a squad, when a loanee comes in on that kind of money. It may work for them, it may not. COYR

What are these rumours about Tadic? Everyone will be super excited to hear the Chinese window doesn't close until the end of Feb
