Maybe I am just cynical and perhaps a little bitter at the way he left. Its just I'd have thought he would have been sad at missing out on potential success and if he cared so much about Saints then he would have stayed to help us achieve things like this.
And that cryptic tweet to Dejan, did they ever meet, do we know what happened, is Fonte a lumberjack?
He should have been with us last night. So sad. The 26th February could have been the crowning moment of his Saints career. Never mind. We March on!
Seems wierd that he didn't want to see the cup through. Oh well I'm sure WHU have got big games coming up too LOL
On the other hand I would find it odd if he didn't acknowledge us after all his years here. I'm sure we will always be special to him....as Lambert said. Looking at what he posted, is he entitled to a medal (if we win)....a case of the whole team get one (though not on the day). Not begrudging him one,,,if he is entitled....rules is rules. Just asking.
See, if thats the case he's lucky I'm not in charge, I would have stripped Kante of his when he left Leicester! Harsh.....but fair.
Here's all I can find. Maybe he's been promised one by the club as he took part. Seems fair. 21.2 In addition to the Cup, the Management Committee shall present twenty-three souvenirs to the winning Club in the Final Tie; and twenty-three souvenirs to the losing Club in the Final Tie; comprising eighteen for the players, one for the Secretary, one for the Manager, one for the Physiotherapist and two for staff other than players. Additional souvenirs may be presented with the consent of the Management Committee but shall be at the cost of the requesting Club. As we are talking about Jose's possibility of a medal, here is a view from the Irish Times. They discuss it clinically as money over glory and wonder what he thought about on Wednesday night. My guess is his first thought was happiness for Saints and then a little bit of 'what might have been'. I think in the end it wasn't just about money....I think he got in a snit about something, felt hard done by and that pushed his decision towards seeking a berth elsewhere. http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/jose-fonte-opts-for-last-big-payday-over-glory-game-1.2953777
We thats put the cat amongst the pigeons! Jose has just done a live interview with Jim White on talkSport and I took notes: Have you always admired WHU - throughout Champ/Prem they always had great atmosphere in their old ground. Love the fans passion Loved my time at Saints and have so many friends still there. Achieved so much over the years My time at Saints came to an end for "one reason or another" He didn't put in a written transfer request After the summer success at the Euro's there were a number of offers on the table and discussions with management about leaving but that didn't happen but I didn't put in a written request "For one reason or another it happened" "100% sure all the players will say I am professional and they know the truth. I never refused to play. I don't want to open a can of worms" "I didn't expect to have moved from Southampton but now its happened I am looking forward" Joined WHU because of the manager and the real ambition of the club. They really want to achieve things Wow......waiting for the response from the club as that contradicts most of the messages coming from them
Not really....not putting it in writing doesn't mean he didn't indicate to the club that he wanted to leave. And I don't think anyone said he had refused to play...Puel said his head wasn't in the right place and Reed said Fonte had behaved professionally.
Also, why would Reed come out and publicly state that Fonte did something when he didn't? If it isn't true then why doesn't Fonte sue Reed over defamation of character? Seem's like Fonte's just trying to get the fans on his side before he returns on Saturday.
As FLT says, we'll never know... As far as I am concerned, he came and did his thing here for a long tine, played well and was an integral part of what we achieved, but he joins the ranks of people who wanted to not want to see out the journey because of money. Mendes changed him and his mindset, from then on his future with the club was unsure. He could have insisted not to play against us if he respected us that much, if Wet Spam wanted him that much, they would've agreed.
