There have been, but there are few more blaming the player (naturally, we all want to defend our clubs) and its more the vitriol that follows the blame on fonte. Anyway, i can understand it if a player has been sly and uncanny for it and revel when you guys give lovren the whole villian nonsense but i'm surprised by the reaction on here. Theres about 1 west ham fan on these boards so i'd be wasted time
Do you really know how many fans have gone one way or the other? Sounds like that doesn't fit an agenda to me. You seem to add a tick into the "For Fonte" column, so I'm not surprised at the taint of your post. Me, I was neutral and said that from the beginning. Now, he's gone.
I hadn't voted on this poll, so thought I should so I can see the results of the poll... guess what? 62% of those voted are neutral, 32% want to clap him or sing his name and 5%, yes a whopping, disgraceful 5% want to boo or jeer him. Perhaps your view of in "here" is misplaced.
There doesn't need to be blame attached to either the club or Jose, he has just decided to move on, much like Rickie did after serving his best years at the club. The more I think about it the more i'm glad that he has gone, I would've hated to see him deteriorate here and ineviatably become less of an influence and warming the bench and possibly losing popularity as fans can be quite brutal if performances are not up to the mark.
I'm an outsider but i agree i am more in the For Fonte category. Maybe my memory has confirmation bias (don't we all) or maybe the against Fonte fans (nothing wrong with this, everyone has their own opinion) are more vocal. It was just something i picked up into the Fonte Transfer Rumour thread which is a pretty massive one!. With respect to this, 1 thing i would add is lets just say Fonte never handed a transfer request in, the club vocally said they wanted to sell Fonte and he left, given his sterling service where he's led the team by example and was part of the league 1 old guard, do you think that there would be a 100% vote to clap him in the stadium, i would probably think there would be. So the 5% who would whop him is the extreme view but the 62% that are 'neutral' are actually part of the against fonte as they think he's not a 'legend' based upon my above assumption, then that would suggest they view him dis-favourably from this incident. Anyway just my opinion and an alternative view.
Firstly, thank you for taking such an interest in our little club, it's very flattering. Secondly, let's just say José came back from the Euro's as a hero and decided not to try and cash in on his status. Let's just say he didn't tell lies about being offered an extension to his contract here, and that he didn't sack his agent in favour of Jose Mourinho's, in a bid to get Man Utd to bid for him. Let's just say he continued his career as a Southampton legend for another year or two, and then moved back to one of the Lisbon clubs. I can say with 100% certainly that if he had done those things then when he did leave he would get 100% of us in the "clap him in the stadium" group. Most of us still love José for what he has done for this club, but we have been somewhat disillusioned by his attitude this season. Those of us at the Watford game which kicked off the season were puzzled why he didn't want to accept the cheers of the fans for his Euro exploits then, when he walked down the touchline. His lack of activity on social media was a marked contrast to previous years, and then all this culminated in his putting in a transfer request and eventually moving to, of all clubs, West Ham. For all that, much as I love him, I don't feel at the moment that I could clap him, although if push comes to shove I might.
Simple mate. Never ASSUME about things other wise you may make an Ass out of U and Me You've dropped in here with your assumptions and decided to take an "against the club" stance. I don't know why you'd do that on another team's forum. You've also made assumptions about my feelings towards Fonte, with just some massively tainted opinion that fits your narrative. You have zero idea what esteem I hold a player in that I have watched most games over the last 7 seasons. You can't attempt to show reason, when your opening post was laced with anti-club feeling. All you have done since is try and justify your view to be pro-Fonte with massive assumptions.
I don't think what i have said is laced with anti-southampton feeling. I don't think anyone knows the full story but Chilco has mentioned from some of Fonte's actions he's not been totally clean. With respect to the club, if they don't feel like giving Fonte a big payday, then that is the way they run the club because at the end of the day they are looking out for Southampton and there is nothing wrong with that (just as i would not want Terry to get a new fat contract) as lets face it he is not getting any younger and he's not been playing the best. I just think it's unfair that Fonte is being ousted as the bad guy in a situation that is mostly unknown with some very very circumstantial evidence (See chilcos post). I don't agree that my assumption is 'biased'l. To assume that the "neutral" approach for a guy who has given you how ever many years is because Fonte is viewed negatively is quite logical as if he had left he had left from the clubs accord 'a la' ricky lambert', he would definitely be clapped and there wouldn't be this indifference to Fonte (only relevant to this poll on the board obviously, who knows what will happen at saint marys in a couple of weeks time) On this board as it's one of the most active and just wanted to comment on a subject that i was interested in.
I'll say it again, you are assuming that most are making out Fonte to be the bad guy! I don't think that's the case.
However, you want to call it, bad or not, it's definitely a negative view of him though. We will just agree to disagree rather than derailing the thread. Good Luck against Pool it's funny watching them go through a bad patch.
Thanks and for the record, I think Fonte is great and did masses amounts for this club. I ticked Neutral.
Be hard to clap a player when his team are playing at St Marys...so might go neutral because of the situation. Would definitely clap him as he went off if substituted...that would be a thanks for everything, but not be considered a positive thing for West Ham. The Telegraph article made a good point....he's moved for little or no improvement (some suggest he took a drop in pay compared to initial offer from Saints) and he would have been better to consider his legacy at a club where he spent the best years of his career.
The majority of our team came out and posted nice messages to Jose after he got his move. I wonder if he will be in a congratulatory mood in the coming days?
Good lad. Must have been a little painful, especially with tonight's Captains words about progression.
Weird that he is posting things like that. If he cared so much he would have fought to stay at the club. Still like the man, I'm not having a go at him but I just think if you make a side ways step you clearly wernt that fussed about us. We have moved on, perhaps he should too.
