249 vs 346 (Ian Rush)
Even our 2nd highest is still higher, Hunt with 286.

Picked out some of the other big clubs;
Arsenal: 228 (Henry)
Citeh: 177
Chelsea: 211 (Lampard!)
Everton: 383 (Dean)
Spurs: 266 (Greaves)

Maybe I'm doing a injustice then. Thought figures would be higher than that.

might be a **** record for a forward but a bloody good one for a midfielder particularly back then.

I wasn't questioning Bobby's record, I was talking about club records.

Generally looking at it the club top goalscorers don't seem to be as high as you'd think they'd be, considering the league had more games and players stayed at clubs alot longer back before the Prem.
But I suppose that's a rose-tinted view of older football and club heroes.

When I mentioned longevity this puts it into perspective (from Sky site)

Charlton 249 goals 20 years
Rooney 249 goals (so far) 12 years
Greeves 266 goals 9 years
Rush 346 goals 8 years
Morris (Barnet) 399 goals 10 years

Got to respect the achievements of Rush, Greeves and Morris given the time they spent at the clubs. Amazing records.

If you think of a 10 year career youd need 30 goals a season over all 10 years to get 300.

Messi will be 500 plus by end of 2017.

Sure if you go 15 years then its 20 a year.

Any way you cut it thats a lot of goals and service to a club.

Example from a playwr weve talked about recently.

Defoe has had now 18 season and scored 285 goals for all clubs.

He'd not be even close to hunt and rush.

Credit for Rooney for equaling the record and inevitably beating it. However many many better players than him have played for utd and he is just fortunate that his longevity has got him there

Well. tbh he is kind of...as utd should have dumped him in fergusons last year or so.

He had to get the goals still though.

Rush was also in a team that absolutely dominated the game in an era when teams didn't have "clean sheet first" mentality you see today. He also had superb players like Dalglish seeing him up every single game.

Rooney's record push has been assisted by Moyes, first developing and selling him, then when he was Man Utd manager giving him a new deal on such high wages he could never leave or be dropped

Rush was also longer than 8 years. His second spell at anfield was that. He spent 15 year with us.

He scored 40 goals twice in his first 7 years and 30 Three times!! First season he barely played. The other season he was injured and still got 26.

He was imo the ronaldo of today in goal scoring terms but as gerrez says he had the messi of his day beside him :)

Quite right, I missed the first 7 (80-87) when I looked at the page <ok> :emoticon-0111-blush

that last years he was slowed up and was playing foil to head down mcmanaman and the brilliant fowler.

he never hit those ehgiths of the first period with kenny though. he did get a few 20 goal hauls
