Mistakes aplenty by Fox, but he had real qualities. He always tried, gave everything and never hid. He was also left exposed on a regular basis by his team mates, and blamed by our fans for mistakes by other players (Bauer' slip against Brizzle being one).
I don't know if he can cut it in the championship, but I wish him the very best. Ajose could learn from his application and unflagging efforts.

I did a poll on Twitter yesterday to gauge Fox's popularity amongst Charlton fans. Despite his undoubted "100% attitude", out of 209 votes so far, 74% wanted Morgan Fox to be sold.

As always under this stinking regime, the worry is what comes next. They have an uncanny knack of replacing a turd with an even bigger one. Chucking a 20 year old kid in to an average defence (Page) is going to be a huge ask, and the suspicion once again is that his recruitment was more down to cost saving than actual ability. Coventry fans on Twitter were certainly not too impressed with him. I do find it bizarre that we still have a knot of fans who are in denial about what is so obviously happening. Duchatelet is like the crack addict who keeps dipping into the family heirlooms to sell in order to fund his addiction. Konsa and then Aribo will inevitably follow next, it's not a case of if but when. Accompanied out of the door by some weasel lies from Meire scripted by Olly Groome. The way the club is now being abused as a cash cow is an affront to everything the likes of Mike Norris and Roger Alwen so recently fought for. It really does seem as if it was all for nothing.

The Money Ball approach is doomed to fail when you have Karel Fraeye and Thomas Driesen implementing it.

Let's recognise it for what it is - pure asset stripping. Some people actually seem to be taking a perverse delight in seeing an average mid table League One team being made even weaker.

Even if one of da Silva, Page or Forster-Caskey proves to be a success, we will still be even weaker than we were.

Where is CARD ?!

OK, just googled it. There are only a tiny number of Charlton fans who like Roland's stewardship, and they have all got together on ITTV, and are busy convincing each other that they are right and everyone else is wrong. It's terrible luck for Charlton, and brilliant luck for Roland that he took over at a time when Steve Avory's Academy is turning out a very talented crop of youngsters. A sort of mini version of the Beckham-Giggs-Scholes-Butt-Neville-Nevill phase. Imagine how much money Roland would have made out of that lot:emoticon-0115-inlov

The story of Billy beane is an incredible one - but there are very few examples since where it's been a success.

Paul Clement was discussing it in his press conference yesterday and it didn't endear him to Swansea fans. They don't have time to mess around with it - they need quality instantly. So do we.
 
What would Brian Clough or Jock Stein have made of it? It's anathema to the spirit of the game. Remember POMO, John Beck's creation, where they watered the pitch near the corner flags? Same sort of stat-based rubbish.
 
Stats are very useful as a supplement to scouting.

For Moneyball to work you need competent people in key positions. Southampton are the only UK football club to successfully implement this strategy, clearly it wouldn't work without Les Reed.
 
Stats are useful if you don't overthink/overuse them. The beauty and negative of stats is you can find what you want if you look hard enough.

I was on a course a few years back with The old Italian manager, Donadoni, and he scoffed at the insinuation that it would replace old fashioned scouting. Moneyball is also so time consuming that they end up having to be like Dreisen and pretty much work as hermit.
 
Why are people saying that Duchatelet is doing the Moneyball approach he is not he is doing the OPPOSITE of the Moneyball approach I am a Boston Red Sox fan the first team that won a World Series using the Moneyball approach that Billy Beane pioneered at Oakland and I read the book when it come out and I understand it and it is clear that most Charlton fans especially the ones on Into The Valley don't have a clue what it is so pay attention it is about sabermetrics finding new stats for players that means they have value that other teams don't realise eg in baseball most people look at average runs batted in and percentage of at bats that the player hits the ball etc but in Moneyball they look at things like the number of walks a player gets which people didn't think was important but obviously you're more likely to score if you have a player at first base so Billy Beane signed players for cheap that had rubbish stats for hits and runs but great for walks and they were worth a lot more than people thought and priced them at a good example that Beane tried lots of times to sign is the eventual Boston Red Sox great Kevin Youkilis case proven and so the equivalent thing of this in football would be for example finding midfielders that are rubbish for goals and assists but that draw a lot of fouls just outside the box ie that player isn't expensive because they don't score or set up goals in the traditional way but they will get you say three times as many free kicks on the edge of the box as the average player so you get goals that way and it is a 'secret stat' that only your boffins have spotted so you sign the player for cheap but look at the players that Duchatelet has signed eg Igor Vetokele the number three top scorer in Denmark for 3 million Euros or Piotr Parzyszek the number one top scorer in Dutch second division for 600k or Nicky Ajose the second top scorer in League One for 700k or whatever these are players with really obvious stats for scoring goals that are therefore priced expensive and turned out to be a bit rubbish and worth a lot less so please don't say that Duchatelet is doing Moneyball because it is obvious even to a blind or deaf person that he is doing the exact opposite of Moneyball the end.

I think the comparative is that when scouting they look for single qualities. Luzon touched on it where he would say he'd like a "quick striker" and that they would find him someone with pace but not necessarily focus on the many of qualities like acceleration, first touch, positioning etc that a striker in that mould needs.
 
Bob Paisley was possibly the most astute judge of a player. He decided not to sign Trevor Francis because his anticipation was poor, which meant he'd always be accelerating to catch up, which would put his body under undue stress and make him injury-prone. Which is exactly what happened to Francis' career. Another time he went to see for himself a Palace defender who had been recommended to him. He left after the pre-match kick-about, saying the player "couldn't kick the ball properly".
