West Ham United's desire for Jermain Defoe has moved up a notch with the Londoners reported to have bid £5 million for him. Sunderland are understood to have rejected the offer which they will view as insulting. Hammers boss Slaven Bilic last week said: "I have a few midfielders from different countries telling me his movement is the best of strikers they have played with. "He's someone else's player so I don't want to talk about it.” Black Cats manager David Moyes immediately described Defoe as "priceless". “No, it wouldn’t be considered,” Moyes said of any bid for their leading scorer. “I don’t think there’s any price because we know that Jermain’s goals are priceless to us.” Moyes knows selling Defoe would be footballing suicide. The striker has scored 11 of Sunderland's 19 goals in the Premier League and should they do the unthinkable and sell him, their days in the top flight would, barring a miracle, be over. The Daily Mirror today reported that West Ham had "made official contact" only for a £5million offer to be "rebuffed". West Ham are on 22 points, just seven better off than the Wearsiders, and Bilic knows they are far from safe. The Hammers chief, also worried at being without three stars at the African Cup of Nations, feels Defoe's goals would seal his club's Premier status so is likely to go considerably higher to bring the eastender back to his home club. But Sunderland would not part with Defoe for £25 million, despite the ex-England forward being 34. Where would they get a replacement for a player of that calibre and at what price? The forward scored 20 Premier League goals in 2016 and has begun 2017 in brilliant form, scoring a penalty double as the Cats fought back twice to draw 2-2 with Liverpool. While a Londoner, who had previously never played north of Tottenham, Defoe enjoys living in the North-East and feels a bond with Sunderland and their fans. The Black Cats brought him back to the Premier League in 2015 after he had left to play in the MLS with Toronto and has played key roles in the club's successful battles against relegation. "TheDaily Mirror today reported that West Ham had "made official contact" only for a £5million offer to be "rebuffed"." Oh the Daily Mirror - the fountain of SAFC knowledge as long as it's made up to try to upset the apple cart!! £5m have to wonder where either (a) the stories come from or (b) what planet the offering clubs are on!!
Not scary at all to me - good sense really. The club must strive to stay in the premier league at all costs or lose a prize asset for nothing. He's 34 too so doesn;t carry a massive sell on fee at the end of the season - although it is the sun so not exactly sure if it's true
If we stay up his goals will be worth more than any transfer fee we can get for him now. I doubt we would be able to replace him for the same amount that we get, let alone less, so would be absolute folly to sell - I would trust that he will be professional enough to give his all even if he does want to go. If we go down his value will be negligible given age etc. so I think the go for free is a reasonable clause. Hopefully, this will not distract him from the cause.
We turn down £10m and he gets season finishing injury in the first game of feb. Sorry, very pessimistic but just acknowledging how our luck can go !
Can't see it happening, Defoe leaving is a stupid scenario. I think the only way this would happen is if a top club wanted him, such as Chelsea and he wanted to push the move through.
Saw that story this morning and looks to me like they'll try to get him at the end of the season as he's on a free - may be wrong though (with hindsight...)
It's not whether he's worth £6 million or whatever, it's what he's worth to us. A glass of water could be worthless but to somebody dying of thirst in a desert it's priceless. That's us.
Yes you can, his goals could be worth £100m plus cos that's what we'd lose if we went down. JD will score goals for any team he plays for and at the minute he is contracted to us till 2019 i believe. There's not many other strikers out there that you can sort of guarantee to get you goals and even off there was, he'd need to get used to our style, epl, fitness levels, etc, etc. To get rid of JD for even £20m now and then go looking for another striker would be suicidal, regardless of what ****e Gelders comes out with.
31yo. If we can replace him for some one less likely to spend time on the physio bench then why not. Younger and fitter legs are maybe what we need in the run in.
I do believe it. JD said on TV last week that there was a couple of strange clauses in his contract preventing him from leaving. At least big tits did summit right. When we stay up not sure if he has to stay again or do we let him go with our good wishes for his services to SAFC. At least then we have time to get new people in. PS, unless Scotland f*ck us up with Moysy leaving about 6 hrs befor the transfer window closes.
Fernabache want to swap Lens & Khazri for Emineke and Van Der Weil. Two wingers for a striker and a Right Back. Thoughts?
Underwhelming - you read the paper reports linking those two and they say "Van Der Weil has struggled" and Emenike hasn't hit the ground running - so why would we want them for players we spent £20m+ on! And they're both late 20's! Although, that said, they can't do much less than either Lens or Khazri have been for us this season - mainly due to lack of opportunity I may add!
