Of course you have to move to keep possession, but a clever players only have to move a few yards to find space and make the ball move 20/30 yards to find them.
United have had some fine athletes over the years but they never wasted their energy, they used it later in games to break fast and score when the other teams were knackered from chasing all over the pitch trying and win the ball back.

 

But if your players don't move them the opposition don't need to cover as much ground either (unless pressing which would be fairly easy if your players aren't moving)

 

Exactly this. Its what managers mean when they talk about earning the right to play against a team.

So you are saying that the two teams wouldn't clock up enough mileage to make it a good game then?

 

Sorry but I think you will find managers are talking about competing for the ball and being sharp/alert enough to get to a loose/second ball first. You don't have to run a marathon for that, if you need to run a marathon then you are chasing the ball far too much because you have little control and the other team is passing through/around you.
