The Man who was Thursday by GK Chesterton is very dark and disturbing whilst the best book i've read recently would be The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North. And for those that like history, Marlborough, His Life and Times by Winston Churchill is a riveting read. Other favourites are the Frank Herbert written Dune books and The Silmarillion

I couldn't get into Closing Time though, unfortunately. It just sits there on the bookshelf, gathering dust.

    I have a signed copy.

But yes, whilst it has its moments, it's a very pale shadow of the prequel.

    Yes.

I found the story fascinating and ended up researching the history of it. For some reason I thought his writing style dropped a level.

And no one has derailed his thread.

An example of how to not cry and whine at the first sign of a piss take.

Love the Clive James autobiographies (actually a trilogy - with May Week was in June and Falling towards England) really clever, witty writing.

agree with Fosse re Julian May - i particularly like Intervention the start of the precursor series to the Saga of the Exiles series.
enjoyes The Amtrak Wars by Patrick Tilley

read mainly non-fiction these days i.e.
Revolutionary in Ireland - the 1970's autobiography of the Sean Macstofian first chief of staff of the provos (very self serving but does throw a light on the early days of PIRA)
Alan Clark Diaries - bizarre , hilarious diary of a randy Tory toff .cracking read but helps if you remember events & politicians of the 80's.
Human history of Coal -Barbara Freese
Che Guevara -Jon Lee Anderson ,wonderful biography but could do with being a tad less detailed !
Civil War (War of the 3 Kingdoms) -fascinating accont of the (english) Civil War.

not reading so much these days so not much new stuff just re read some of the 4 bookcases full we have ,never mind the boxes in the dump garage

    Yep...

Made a refreshing change to read of a aristocratic public schoolboy who wasn't into fiddling with small boys or other men.

    mother & 2 daughters :emoticon-0178-rock:

he also got a bit pissed before appearing on question time and defended the England fans rioting in Marseille
"they're just showing the martial spirit that made this country great " <laugh>

it is a strange but brilliant mix of right wing politics , upper class tossers , animal rights and lechery.
