Step back to 1953, the year of the "Matthews Final", when the most a footballer was paid was £15 per week; £13 in the summer. Fast forward to 1961 by which time the upper limit had risen to £20pw and enter the PFA Chairman. On this day 56 years ago Jimmy Hill forced the ruling body to abolish the maximum wages cap.

Always one to encourage publicity Tommy Trinder stepped into the limelight and was the first Chairman to break the barrier. And he did it with a flourish giving Johnny Haynes £100pw.

Life isn't necessarily fair though. Or so thought some in the Fulham dressing room at the time. Maurice Cook was told that his off-season summer wage would be £15 a week and protested about the disparity between this miserly sum and what Haynes was receiving.

'But Haynes is a far better player than you are,' Cook was told.

'Not in the f****** summer, he's not,' Cook retorted.
