True but Matip is one player from our back line (plus keeper) who can carry the ball and pass. Coutinho picked up the ball very deep but was able to carry it as well and get us up the pitch.

I do think he's more dangerous playing in that area of the pitch vs nearer the box. As we saw, he was still able to get up and support the attack.

Its very limited but his stats in CM (including his time there in 13/14) are incredible in terms of his dribbling and chances created. He is the next iniesta IMO.

the point i would make is this:

a midfielder is supposed to be with the ball not ahead of it and not 30 yards behind it

Forwards should be ahead of the ball till it arrives to finish and defenders should be behind the ball until a challenge is made

This is why I personally HATE to see CMs jogging up the pitch while CBs pass the ball about as they are simply not in position to get on it and affect play.

    Midfielders should make the play.

IMO coutinho was exactly where he should have been.

this is also why i chuckle seeing the hype about delle alli and he reminds me of what we ourselves did to gerrard.... oh he's got talent lets push him on hoof it up to him and let him be dangerous up there. this is why english clubs fail in euope and england fails internationally.

Lets look on the other hand and real midfielders... scholes mentioned before. ALWAYS with the ball. Modric at madrid. always with the ball. Pirlo... the trend continues. Zavi, iniesta... you name them they are there where the ball is getting on it making the play.

If coutinho can do this he will double his potential transfer fee within 12 months.... do it in CL and impress and we will have some time holding on to him.

Basically I loved what I saw, can he deliver even more?

Coutinhos role is to play make. He was getting ball from the defence, he was getting into the box. He was making things happen.

Moving Coutinho into midfield means a slot opens up in attack - a left side mane is needed!

But whete does this leave Lallana considering he was moved into that role earlier ...

    tough question to answer..

same could be asked of wijnaldum.

Indeed we would ASSUME firmino, mane and someone are the front 3 then that really leaves 3 slots in CM.

wijnaldum has played no 8 all season really.

would we see a midfield trhee containing both coutinho and lallana?... in short maybe.

Can Lallana and Coutinho is a bit too lightweight for my liking and it puts Can under enormous pressure (defensively).

For me, Keita remains to be a big target and would play the high energy, ball carrying role between Can and Coutinho.

Then it leaves Henderson Gini and Lallana as options to rotate with.

But I still think Klopp goes back to a 4231 for next season ...

Regarding @astro and @Diego discussing who will go further in Champions League.

I think Liverpool have a better chance of making the group. We only have to win a playoff against a lower ranked team. United have to win a cup final against a decent team.

Should United win Europa though, for which, they are favourites, they will no doubt be in a higher seed group for the group stages. That could be massive. Plus if they spend another $300 million this summer on transfers they will have some quality players that Jose hasn't been able to ruin/ turn into dive-monkeys yet.

Its quite simple in my view. Lfc ranking means if we get out of groups we will have over achieved.

We will be 3rd seeds at best so should.
finish 3rd depending on luck of draw.

Right now utd are in some early qualifying round not in the main comp :bandit:

You've jinxed it now. Mané, Coutinho, Firmino, and Milner all to suffer from testicular torsion the night before the match.
