A place to discuss the events in UEFA land during the 2017-18 season. UEFA CL/EL games not involving Spurs, tournament draws, which UEFA officials have been arrested etc.
So we get down to the business of the CL group stage draws. And as always, we turn to the mighty Bert for guidance ... Where we are : https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/data/method4/trank2017.html
How the CL draw pots currently are : https://kassiesa.home.xs4all.nl/bert/uefa/seedcl2017.html Schalke and Leverkusen will not be in the CL. So Spurs are provisionally #18 in the CL rankings ( #16 means in draw pot 2) .
Its not quite as simple as that unfortunately Monaco as Champions of France and Spartak Moscow as Russian champions will be in pot 1 and both are below us in the rankings. If Man Utd win the Europa, City finish 3rd, and Napoli finish above Roma in serie A then by my reckoning we will be in pot 3 again already.
Does that "W3 4RE" thing work in Flemish or French? I always wondered why European clubs post so much stuff in English while their fan bases can't extend that far from their borders.
A lot of European clubs have multiple Twitter accounts for different languages. Case is point Bayern have their official Twitter, English-language Twitter, Spanish-language Twitter, Arabic-language Twitter and one for the US market - and it's worth pointing out that Spurs have Spanish, Indian, Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian Twitter feeds...although in our case, the Spanish feed is the only one that isn't just a bunch of retweets from our official account. Anderlecht, meanwhile, regularly has to post the same tweet in two languages, once in Flemish and once in French - but for things like winning titles they post in English because that's more likely to be shared via English-language websites, so they don't want to scare people off by tweeting in a funny language.
In addition to what Croydon said, I think that some clubs are hoping to pick up new fans from other countries. English is very widely spoken, so they could grab some from pretty much anywhere, in addition to Americans, Canadians and the like. The quality of Belgian players in other big leagues attracts some attention, too.
As of today we know the 8 top seeded sides - Real, Juve, Bayern, Chelsea, Monaco, Benfica, Shaktar & Spartak Moscow. Barca, Athletico, Man City, PSG, Porto and Dortmund will be in pot 2, Man U will join them if they win the Europa and Pot 2 will be full if Napoli over take Roma next weekend. So this week I will be supporting Ajax and Roma as that will be our best hope of making pot 2. With Liverpool in the qualifier what odds that they draw Brendans Celtic?
It'd be a pity...I'd much rather it was us who gave them the sort of casual mauling that would render Rodgers too shocked to spout his deluded nonsense.
Napoli and Roma both qualify, but at the moment Napoli would go into qualifying round, so we would need them to lose that match. Is that correct? From RDBD's link we are top of Pot 3 and need both Utd to lose and Napoli to finish 3rd and lose the qualifying round as I see it?
That's the way I see it too, Sevilla will also be in the qualifiers but both will be seeded so I think that pot 3 beckons again.
There's some suggestion that we could face Bayern, Barca and Roma in the group! It would make it interesting, at least.
Interesting is one word for it, would great from a fans perspective, but could also be Spartak, Porto & Feyenord
