I stumbled across a short film by FourFourTwo, following the English Football League exit trials - young players who have spent many years at clubs, only to be told they weren't going to be offered pro contracts. It's a real eye-opener about the realities of players trying to fulfil their dreams and the minority that actually do so.
I subscribe to that site. It includes very useful training videos for coaches and kids to use ... I thought about posting that video. There is a tendency to demonise football players, while forgetting the sacrifices made. A huge effort is involved from six, seven, eight ... Losing their childhoods and most will not achieve Bath City standard. One of those kids was at his club for nine years before being released. Its easier to be a GP. Less than half a % become professionals through development football.
My son was involved in exit trials. He no longer has a great deal of love for playing football and would only ever have been involved at lower league level at best. 2 in 600 academy players become professional. Its not its all its cracked up to be!
Sons fine. May interest peoples kids, both share their experiences and create excellent training guides and tips.
