Personally I think the appointment of a Director of Football is the best way forward. My reasoning being that we as a club can't afford high end championship standard players. Therefore our best chance of recruiting well has to be by either snapping up promising youngsters from the the lower leagues or signing previously unheard of foreign talent. Every manager/coach has a few players he knows from previously and usually tries to sign or loan them for his current team. Hence Monk recruited predominantly from Swansea with Bartley, Hernandes as successes and Grimes, Barrow as failures. This obviously can be effective in the short term but eventually that source of talent will exhaust itself and the net needs to be cast much wider to unearth the quality needed. A DOF especially one who has worked in multiple Leagues should have a wealth of contacts and enough experience to be able to evaluate the 1000's of players who are potentially available to us and eventually sign a small select few who will make the manager/coach's job easier. Can a manager/coach ever have the time to actually carry out that task and also players should be recruited to play for the club and their loyalty should be to the club and not especially to the manager/coach of that time, it's beneficial if they like and respect the manager/coach but it shouldn't be just about he coach as it seems with Bartley for example. If Monk has resigned because he didn't like the idea of working with a DOF then I'm even more disappointed in him. A DOF is there to help the manager/coach be successful, to think otherwise is nonsensical or perhaps more accurately shortsighted and selfish as the club and the success of the club should be paramount as should the welfare/improvement of the group of players you've been coaching.
Grayson gave us some of the best attacking football but WJ correct as he couldnt set up our defence. Mind you our defence is almost intact from last season and given the caliber of the players back then we would have won the league. So if SG gets the job I'll be chuffed as I will be if its Laudrup or Karanka
https://www.leedsunited.com/news/academy-news/21948/united-seek-host-families Looks like a new regime and a very good idea as we move back to boarding our kids. Lucy Ward lost her job and the housekeeping role went plus boarding facilities. Looks like TA is going as well as ER, so good on Radz so far as he looks to the future
It's time it was sorted. all this DOf bollix is pretty much immaterial. The clubs success or otherwise is down to having the right watermelon or not. #endofdiscussion
I am underwhelmed and there is no standout candidate, but Monk wasn't exactly pulling up trees despite what the happyclappies were saying. We were playing awful football. Karanka would be more of the same, I don't think we should ever go back as it never works so that's Grayson out... so Laudrup it is.
Laudrup would be a real coup. Must have masses of contacts throughout the world so should be able to drum up enough quality players to get us out of this crappy League.
Tend to agree with you. And what's wrong with a manager referring a player to the DoF? And vice-versa, of course, when required (if they can put their egos to the side).
Was just waiting for you to come over to todays debate. Thought yesterdays had fizzled out but then it all sort of started up again so guess you've been busy !
Leeds 2010 team finished 7th because January window ignored by Bates. Graysons Defenders Lees, Parker, Naylor, McCartney, Connolly, White, Bromby, Bruce, Crowe, O'Brian, Leeds 2017 team finished 7th because January window not done properly. Monks Defenders Berardi, Taylor, Ayling, Cooper, Jannson, Bartley, Coyle, Denton, using Monks defence with Graysons midfield and attack wins promotion. Snodgrass, Beckford, Becchio, Howson, Grella, Hughes, Gradel, Johnson, Prutton, Clayton, Somma very decent team from this lot
so Wolves have appointed Porto's sacked manager to replace Lambert ... wow, he won't come cheap, and was in line to take over at Roma ... these Championship clubs are really gambling big time, and it will be interesting to see how long they can continue to throw huge lumps of cash at failed promotion campaigns ... clubs like Derby and Wednesday, for example, have spent heavily in recent seasons and need to be careful ... one thing we know for certain, big budgets guarantee nothing in the crazy world of the Championship Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
