No player is a direct replacement. Would always be hard to replace an exciting player like Mane....though he took a while to really settle in...Liverpool are reaping the benefits of the Saints gloss on Mane. I have high hopes for Redmond...I feel he will be a truly exciting player...so exciting that we will be having the usual wailing and gnashing of teeth as others try to relieve us of him in a year or two.
£34M plus £2M addons, from what I recall but who really knows? I agree with most of the above (apart FLT!) that we could of & should of got more. £34M was just about ok at that moment (bare, bare minimum IMO) but certainly agree after Bolasie, his stock would have risen & it did seem strange at the time, we were a bit quick off the mark to agree everything & sell.
I believe it was because we told Mane that if he stays another year we will let him leave at the end of the season.
So again, why so quick off the mark for such a highly valued player. I appreciate he was going but ............ Anyway done now regardless. With all the money sloshing around in the PL I'm not sure if they give a dam about £2-3M either way (bit tongue in cheek).
We got a good price for Mane and Wanyama....if it was lower than we might have got by playing hardball, we gained by keeping them for another year...and what a good year that was. No player would trust us again if we made promises and then ended up blocking a move because we were greedy. Seems a good deal to get another season and say we will negotiate with the team they want. We hardly got peanuts, did we? Remember Spider. It all worked out in the end, but he was furious after a verbal agreement with someone (presumably Nicola) wasn't honoured and he had to stay another season.
Come now, that's not how this discussion should role. He is a super talented footballer, he had a two year deal, we sold very quick. Palace mugged EFC for £30M for Yannick, and he doesn't come close to SM. Liverpool stated he was their number one signing, we could have made them uncomfortable for an afternoon at least. Saying all that, the players do carry a lot of power, & I know how he forced his way to get a transfer to us, so it could have been worse. But.......
I do like this nice teeth. Problem is, that if he's say a £10m player the other 64% of the time, you've undersold by £6.4m
Please don't tell me we are going to start with target as first choice next season? He may well turn into a great player but ATM is back up. We need better to do as well as we have this season, let alone improve.
It's ok, we'all sign a better LB, he'll get injured and then Targett will start the season anyway and we'll finish 7th. Just like under Koeman when Bertrand was injured.
This could have been a break through season for Matt....he would have got match time from Puel. He'll be a good back up (why buy another one when we have him...and he counts as home grown) either to Bertrand or to a new signing. I have faith in him to come good. If you can't get game time at a home club like Saints, where will you get it?
We might do just fine with Targett as a starting left back if the rest of the defence stays the same, but it seem everyone will be gone but Cedric (Fonte already out, Virgil and Bertrand on their way)
Met a guy in the chip shop last night who claimed he knows someone who knows someone who knows Virgil and that Virgil is definitely staying Of course, I always believe random blokes at the chop shop ......
Always easier to believe what you want to believe On no basis whatsoever I think he will stay as well...mainly because of his long injury. He needs another good season with us for anyone to risk top money on him...and we won't sell for less than top money. And he owes us.
