In my view Jose went where he should have for the block, Coutinho badly miskicked it and ended up stepping on Fonte's sliding foot. You can't give a striker a penalty for a bad miskick. In fact, most of the time you won't get one if you shoot and then get tackled. No penalty.
After a night to think about things I will climb down about Charlie. The main problem I think is that none of our strike force are firing at the moment, so it was wrong of me to single Austin out. He is, as I said yesterday, the best we have. I'm not climbing down about Redmond though. You are right, from what I could see on TV yesterday, he might have been out on a training jog around the pitch.
My view was, ok a miskick, nothing to do with Fonte's challenge, and then Fonte just wiped him out. Regarding the VVW one, yes he pulled the shirt but after that the player still dived. I'm fed up with this, "I felt a touch so I went down" mentality. It was a foul without question but it was still a dive.
I think the best quote I heard (not sure who said it) that sums up Mane is that he is a £100m player 36% of the time. I would agree with this totally. On his day, he is unplayable, but those days are too intermittent for him to be a top top player just yet...he does seem to be improving in this respect though
It looked a bit like that, the problem was the ball catching Coutinho's standing foot as he swung the striking foot and his momentum took him into Fonte as he made his challenge, the ball was long gone before they made any contact, it would have been harsh to call it a penalty.
I still think he was bloody awful (which I can forgive) and uninterested (which I can't). Once decent cross, half a dozen half-hearted runs, a few dribbles past one man too many, a dozen poor passes and the rest of the time standing about scratching his arse is not enough from a player. Vin
Sounds like a plan! Edit: perhaps we could coincide it with Saints playing Barcelona in the CL next season?
I am going to get grief for this and several will think that old bendit is off his meds, but I really do think that Virgil should be and will be moved eventually into midfield. As a CB he is imperious, but as a CB he is unable to grab hold of a game like a MF player can. he has all the hallmarks of being a player like Vieira Toure, shooting , passing, tackling, speed, heading, vision and running with the ball he has it all and some manager will realise that the guy is a game saver (like yesterday) he could also be a game winner.
Surely if the ball was long gone it makes it more of a penalty not less. Anyway, one way or another we rode our luck a bit and had that one great chance to snatch it. Not bad because I'm sure Liverpool had at least 13 players!
