He had to go most of the season with injuries to key players, leaving him with no striker capable of hitting a cow's arse with a banjo, & a CB pairing consisting of the previous season's third choice and an untried academy player.

And our "strikers" somehow contrived to miss 4 penalties, which must be some kind of record. Frel sorry for the guy. He had lost the fans, but most football fans are dicks anyway.

Whenever I watched Southampton, It was like watching Louis Van Gaal football all over again in my opinion.

He could only work with what he had though Matt. At least he made us difficult to beat.

We were frustrating to watch, yeah. But if we'd converted even a few of the chances we'd created, we would have won some of the games we drew, and no one ever gets bored of winning.

Anyway, he's gone. He got a rough deal I think, but he won't starve. There's plenty of people in the world who wouldn't mind swapping places with Claude Puel.

I watched the game at Stamford Bridge and Southampton played some excellent football. One of the best teams I saw at the Bridge this year.

He really is just a dull person in general, and there's less and less room for folk like that in modern football, when building a brand is so vital to long term financial success. He just reminded me of Avram Grant, didn't necessarily do a bad job but about as inspiring as a pep talk from Andy Murray.

Saints can be a good side, if their owners actually show some ambition, not just with the next manager but also by actually trying to build a squad for success instead of being Liverpool's bitch.

Yeah, see you just summed up what I find so depressing about the modern game. I am not interested in "building a brand". I support Saints, they're my team, and they have brought me joy and sorrow in equal measure. But one thing they will never be in my eyes is a "brand". Nor, to me, will football ever be a "product".

Interesting that you mention Andy Murray. The most successful British tennis player since Fred Perry (who played so long ago he wore long trousers ffs), and people knock him because he doesn't give a good interview. **** his critics, what have they ever won?

First season in England and he finished 8th and got to a cup final.
Given the teams that make up the top 7, what exactly were the board hoping for?
Not an amazing performance, but a pretty solid one and I think he should've been given a chance.

If they'd lost confidence in him though, then now's the time to make the move.
Get rid, bring someone in and give them money and a full pre-season, so that they can hit the ground running.
Letting a manager have a few games and then getting shot of them is bloody stupid.

Who's criticising his Tennis? What a boring world it would be if success bought immunity from ridicule.

As for your team, good for you for sticking to your principles, but they won't be hanging around for you.

    This ^

Everton, Arsenal, Man United, Liverpool, Man City, Spurs and Chelsea were the teams who finished above Saints this past season.
Clubs that are all leaps and bounds bigger than Southampton in terms of finance, history, success, reputation........
What in the **** were they hoping for?

Except for maybe sneaking the league cup final and actually adding some silverware, I am not totally sure that it would have been possible to have a more successful season, given their personnel and the money they spent.
And lets not forget they lost the league cup final to the most expensively assembled squad in football history as well......managed by probably the single best football manager alive.

Maybe the Southampton board should move over to Arsenal

    Great post.

As I've said to a lot of fans who wanted him out...

If you're disappointed with 8th and a cup final, you're probably supporting the wrong club.

Just hope the takeover/manager is sorted soonrr rather than later.

I don't see how they are our bitch? We give them loads of cash for players that are usually **** or bang average. Mane being the exception, Lallana had improved but it took a while.
