We had Paul Hurst come in as manager and he's taken a bunch of players who were leaking goals every game, especially crosses in from the right. He's turned them into a more confident defensive unit. It just goes to show what a manager and change in coaching can do. We haven't conceded at home since he came and we were regularly shipping at least one goal within 10 minutes of the start of play. Your team almost did the same within two minutes. Gaffney looked a pain in the star to our defense, but it seems from reading on here that he's as potent as some of our recent strikers. The changes made at half time did make the Gas a bigger threat and Harrison had some real pace on him. However as the game progressed things settled down again. Looking forward to making the trip to Bristol in April as we really like the place. Good luck with the rest of the season. Oh, funny thing I read was that a Rovers fan was seen hurling abuse whilst dressed as a snowman as he was being arrested. Would be great to have seen a picture of that!
Its like having an adrenaline rush from the promotion. Most teams have it when they get promoted (unless you are Cheltenham this season of course ). When we were in the conference, we signed good non league players who could make it at league 2 level. So when we got promoted from non league, we already had enough quality about us to continue progressing forward AFTER that initial buzz/adrenaline ran out, which got us promoted again. However this time, now the adrenaline has gone, we dont have that quality to keep us going as the players are league 2 players at best and they are showing that now in all its glory. I mean come on, we played against the bottom side and we failed to get a single shot on target. Thats crap! DC has shown too much loyalty to these players. He got a big squad (lots of loans) to cover his ass if some players cant make the step up to league 1. Unfortunately, he didnt count of most of the squad not being good enough. A decent keeper could make all the difference. A good keeper installs confidence in the defence. When the defence are confident, that gives the creative players freedom to do their thing. Also taking our chances is critical. How many times have we been dominating the game but miss simple chances and then we get punished by 1 attack by the opposition? That adds to the pressure too. The defence gets nervous and we are where we are now! DC got a lot of work to do.
Just seen the highlights. They obviously got desperate to show attacks from us because they showed both our chances within the 1st 2 minutes and then its all Shrewsbury. The 1st goal was shockingly bad. No one closed down the player running with the ball who had bags of time and freedom. Remember this is the 16th minute when our players should still have the energy and concentration to not let this happen. The cross had a deflection on it which is unfortunate as we would have cleared the ball but the deflection made it difficult. Puddy dives down to save us giving away a corner but instead to save a corner, he gifts them a goal. What a joke! The penalty is harsh for me. The Shrewsbury player hit it hard at Hartley who was just a couple of yards away. He didnt stand a chance to get his arms out the way. To me that was ball to hand and was harsh. However, we didnt deserve to get anything from the game anyway.
It's a long time since I've heard any commentator describing any of our players as inept. I guess Tom Lockyer will be rested or dropped now. Some of these players may need a bit of sports psychology to get them back on track. It's been so full on for so long now, that a few of these lads almost need to take a step back and remember how they got where they are, and what they were doing that they're not doing now.
What's the point of signing wingers if you are not going play them Boden hasn't hit the form of last season but continually not playing him isn't going to help rediscover that form
Not signing a regular keeper has been a mistake. We've seen this before over the years and at this level a decent keeper makes a huge difference to the confidence of the whole team.
