Early 60's mate. We beat them in a pre season friendly 7-1 or maybe 2, not sure now about their score, speaking from memory here, and although the Celtic lads were friendly sober, and good company in town at first, but once the pubs shut it was a very different story. .
Was in the Gannet when it kicked off. Must have been arranged. They produced toothbrushes with a razor blade attached at either side so when you were cut the skin couldnt be sewn back together. The Vaux lads produced baseball bats. Quite scary actually. At one point I almost spilled my beer.
I was in the Argo at last orders and had to catch the bus up to Red House from the other end of Fawcett Street, bodies every where, shop windows in, buses stoned, mayhem it was, and as you say it had a pre-planed feel to it. Pleased you also remember it mate, as I was starting to think I had dreamt it up. I don't know if it was even reported, didn't bother in them days, not like now.
We were being urged to leave by that back door and end up outside underneath the ramp to get to the car park. F*ck that I nearly had a full pint.
The Glasgow lads can be a handful like. Worked up there a few times. Even the cabbies have a list of blacklisted pubs where they wont pick up or drop off at. Any of you lads at Benno's testimonial? I was & I never saw any bother but read all about it the next day. Saw loads of pissed up Jocks but never saw any violence.
Can't stand either Glasgow club. I'd rather wipe my arse with a hedgehog that support either of them. They are just religious fanatics in reality.
I would personally think twice about any "friendly" matches involving either Rangers or Celtic. Religion aside, the Jocks have a deep sense of historical injustice, which surfaces once a few drams are taken. Of course the beneficiaries will be well out of harms way, counting the takings, while the rest of us pay for it. My advice would be to stay well clear, from both parties.
Thank you for the response A bit before my time, but I can easily imagine a group of irate glaswegians on a quest for more booze
