I'm not scared by that prospect at all tbh. At some point we need to trust them and I think someone like Sam might well respond well to being 'number one'.
An underated quality of Bertrand's is his ability to play very well as part of a back 3 as well as full back/wing back. IF he goes then, with his contract situation, we should demand top dollar for him as I do think he'll be more difficult to replace than others do. He's been excellent since the day we signed him.
But not every game. It's why you can tell something isn't right with him. This season has been a big drop off for Bertrand.
I'd agree that toward the end of the season he did drop off a bit. But I think because we had nothing left to fight for the entire team did. Let's hope it's that rather because he doesn't want to be here
He exceeded expectations, but I don't think he'd live up to them as a starting-quality Premier League LB. Which isn't a slight...he has only barely begun to be a left back at all, and while his defending was surprisingly good for a winger-playing-defense, it was pretty ragged for an every-week defender.
There is. But is that potential best-served by thrusting him into a position where the rawness in his game will get exposed? My concern is that this isn't terribly fair to McQueen...he'll be placed in a situation where we need him to be fairly close to the finished article at a point in his development where we really cannot expect him to be that.
They, along with a host of other clubs, may well sound us out with regard to our intentions - which I hope and expect to be that he can only leave next summer.
Sometimes that is the only way to know whether a player is really good enough. Sure, it is a big risk and I'd be cautious, but it can pay dividends. Look at Harry Kane, he ended up getting thrown in at the deep end and didn't do too badly. High risk, high reward.
I remember the Kane situation slightly differently. After years on loan, they gave him a few shots in Europey, where he performed so well that the fans started putting pressure on management to use him in more important matches. Which they didn't at first, but eventually he forced his way in. My memory could be incorrect, however.
Correct about the loan situation but McQueen has been loaned about before too. Kane did impress in the Europa but spurs were partially forced to play him because Soldado was crap! It isn't exactly the same I'll grant you but he went from playing very little to starting weekly pretty quickly. Certainly some similarities to illustrate my point.
Yep. Obviously the first two are way out thier on their own. So if you're going to pick the guy in third place - best of the rest, if you like - then I think I would say that Bertrand pips Cedric for that. I just hope that we get a top fee for him. But, as with Virgil, I have little faith in that. (For me, getting top dollar for Vigil and Bertrand - and then spending it well - is far more important than Puel in or out)
And spending it, period. This isn't a window where we can afford to sell Virgil and Bertrand, spend half of the proceeds in transfer fees, and add the rest to our rainy day fund.
