Fabulous. If only you could wind the clock back. Ron was my first footballer hero followed by Channon and then Stevie Williams.
And another. please log in to view this image Saints using the tactic of playing only Ron again. Seemed to work ok.
Excellent.! Is this Coventry or Man City.? All I know for sure is that I don't want a pint of Watneys.
OK, I've now found a few. I'll just churn them out one by one: The Dell. First, Ron jumps for the ball and Man City's Tony Towers doesn't. Ref keeps a close eye on things:
Against Arsenal. Ron loses this one in the Sun, but Micky looks ready to pounce. Stokesy in support. West Stand in background. Rizlas anyone.?
Ron outjumped.! Against Burnley, who were a very good side indeed in the 60s. This is early 70's I feel:
This one is definitely AWAY at Highbury. Bob Wilson is the keeper [wearing gloves - blimey]. Could be Jon Sammels having a snort. Can't remember. This is the era when I was interested in football generally, but primarily Saints. Nowadays I just don't give a toss about who plays for who or what they did, unless they play or do it for Southampton.
One of the great man a couple of years before he died. I know that he was sad that his brave wife had died before him, but he was so grateful to Saints fans, and knew that he was loved and not forgotten. Note new perfect gnashers:
And finally from me, as we remember him. Chilco's avatar reminds us every time, but here's the big picture. What a genuinely great player he was:
Seeing Bob Wilson there reminds me of the time when Hugh Fisher broke his leg(s). Was it both? I rarely ventured into the Archers Road end but was there on that particular day. Wilson had a reputation for being a brave keeper, diving at the feet of approaching players which he did to Fisher. Unfortunately, Fisher's legs took Wilson's full weight and were broken. Being close to the pitch, I could hear the Saints players giving Wilson dogs abuse, especially Channon. "You've broken his ****ing legs you c..." was one comment I can remember. Although he recovered enough to play again I don't think poor old Hughie was ever the same after his injury.
Relax. That was an evening game IIRC and it was pouring with rain. The only hard bits of the pitch were the white lines. They were impervious to water.
By the way, in answer to the question as to whether Ron was low flying against Man City or Coventry City. It was Coventry City. Within the time frame of Coventry's strip shown there, there are two 0-0s and a 1-0. Let's take the 1-0, scored by... Jimmy Gabriel. So Ron's flying header either missed or was saved. Or you can just forget you read that last sentence.
