got most of his runs batting 4 or 5 rather than opening (which he did occasionally) but a fine batsman non the less. excellent umpire as well, after he retired from playing.
Got his autograph at Circle one Sunday in the 70s, along with Chris Old, Tony Nich, Phil Sharpe, Bairstow and the Holy Grail Geoff Boycott. JPL games used to pull 6,000 back then, 40 overs a side. Great cheap Sunday afternoon entertainment. Don Wilson tossing the coin if I remember rightly.

Yes, it's a while since I have been to Scarborough, the last time I went to watch Cricket was Headingley.
I'm fortunate, to some extent, I live 10mins from Chester-le-Street and usually attend all of the Yorkshire games and more besides - got my ticket for the summer test - sadly , the powers that be demoted Co Durham, but I shall attend with the lads anyway. Can't beat a good day out at the cricket ... hic
One of my fondest memories when I was young, was we had a cottage in Dent dale, and my father and myself would go and watch Cricket at Sedbergh School. Having a summer afternoon there was a lovely, relaxing part of the holiday.
Ended up at Forest and came to BP with them in the 70s. Despise Celtic and their whole 'rebel' plastic paddy fanbase, but that 67 team were a great team and they all came from within a 30(?) mile radius of their ground. Gemmell scored a screamer in the final against Internazionale of Milan . Big Jock Knew a good player when he saw one.
