Just a tad too young to qualify for it. Should it be brought back, definately if only to put some backbone and respect into the younger generation but unfortunately the generation that needed it most was the 60s till the 90s and those lucky buggers missed it. Sadly finances would now dictate and this would be a non runner.
I volunteered in 1985 but that was purely because there was **** all else to do. I understand your sentiments about bringing it back but I don't think the forces want it. I'd love to march my boy off to the AFCO, bugger leaves shool next year.
I joined up in 1961. By that time National Service had just finished a few months before, so there were still a lot in by the time I was out of training and onto a unit. I do remember the fuss though when some genius in The Defense Department realised that they hadn't though it all through very well and they were going to be short of bodies. A few poor sods remaining, and these were the ones that had just missed the cut off date to start with, suddenly found themselves with an extra six months to do. They were not happy!!!! As for bringing it back, NO CHANCE. Mostly, young lads in the 50's look at it as a chance to get away from home and see the world. We had an Empire and there was a chance of being sent almost anywhere. None of that applies now. The idea of setting up the training facilities from scratch would in any event be impossible given the current size of the Forces and the existing commitments. After all, any kids who want to join have only to go to the nearest Recruitment office.
The country is far too multicultural and feminist to bring back national service. There should be something though, I just don't know what. Kids these days aged 16 are generally ****ing stupid, gormless, useless, boring and soft as ****.
We've got plenty of backbone, it's not like we dropped a few vertebrae between generations. As for respect... If you want it, try not throwing generation wide insults around. Respect is earned, not given out free. That's something that one of your generation taught me - you must have skipped school that day.
National Service interesting question. Personally I believe there should be no unemployment, by that i don't mean stopping benefits, I mean that everyone who is capable should be doing something. I'm careful of how i approach this with my answer by saying maybe it should be an OPTION, if you choose not to do that, then don a yellow jacket and go and pick litter up off the street, in areas where there are not employed street cleaners. After all if you are going to pay people benefit then they at least should be doing something to contribute towards society. I'm fed up with seeing disabled people capable of working and fit young men sitting around idle. I also believe with some exceptions, that a lot of disabled people are also capable of working, everyone who wants to be treated equally, should be precisely treated like that, the SAME, no excuses! We created a culture of non working people, and need to continue to rectify that, it needs to become the norm that if you don't work, you have to do something to earn your money. I give exception to people who have just lost their job, because they have paid in to be allowed 6 months entitlement, but after that period elapses then the same rule then again applies. If we are Brexiting particularly, this is the time we need every citizen to account for their contribution to life, because i for one am pissed off with carrying them in my taxes.
