Leeds make the 100 mile trip North to Newcastle aiming to make it a Good Friday for the West Yorkshire outfit. Toon duo Dwight Gayle and Ciaran Clark will miss the tie if the YEP are to be believed. They claim claim striker Gayle is ruled out of the televised St James’ Park fixture with a hamstring injury that could end his season. Clark will also be absent with the injury that has kept him out of Newcastle’s last four matches Cooper serves his 3rd of 5 match bans for his accidental stamp on a Reading player whilst Sacko is also ruled out with an ankle injury. I'd be surprised if Monk makes many changes to the team that beat Preston 3-0 at the weekend.
Morning all Team played really well Saturday but I would be amazed if he started with Pedraza, Phillips, Viera and Roofe across the middle at St. James Park. Could easily see him bringing O'Kane, Bridcutt and Doukarra in on Friday for experience and a bit of beef. That would also leave a few fresh again for Wolves on Monday. A win on Friday would be amazing and a draw decent but would need to back up with a result on Monday if we drew or lost.
We didn't discuss that on Saturday - any idea why he did go 5 at the back? Was it consolidation? It's the first time GM has used such a tactic this season. One tihng I noted is that we still haven't learned how to kill a game. Instead of taking the ball into the corners at 2-0, we continued to attack. Part of me's thrilled that we scored again, but I think the longer game is to use those bloody corner areas to kill off a game.
Would like to see us go 5 at the back at Newcastle, about time we gave the opposition something to think about, plus teams have won there by parking the bus and scoring on the break. We can be quick on the break.
Morning all. Newcastle, like many at the top end, have shown patchy form of late. Watched them against the Wendies and theyre no great shakes. I wont be one bit surprised if we get a result there on Friday
Whatever formation Monk uses against Newcs our midfield need to be on the ball and more, and we need to attack more down middle, which brings our mids into play. Unless Newcs collapse, this is going to be a toughy, especially after they lost to Weds.
Morning all .. Newcastle will bounce back and win this one because they simply have to ... if they play like they did against Wendies and Wigan then Leeds will turn them over now, about attacking through the middle and bringing mids into the game ... mids can only be "brought into the game" if they push up to the opposition penalty area, but that's not how Leeds are set up Leeds do it pretty much how Palace dismantled Arsenal last night, use wide men in space on the counter with the 10 (Hernandez) in support of the striker Plan A - counter attack - draw opposition deep into our half, break up attack using defence and holding mids, get ball away to wide men to attack the space at speed and create opportunities ... the key to this is GETTING THE BALL TO THE WIDE PLAYERS ... simple but effective if you have a strong defence and tough tackling holding mids WHO CAN MAKE THE OUT BALL PASS Plan B (yes, there is one) - build your own attack - this is where the full backs become wingers, and the wide men push infield to create extra pressure on the centre backs, leaving space out wide for the full backs to run into and get crosses in ... here the 10 (Hernandez) has freedom to roam and drop into pockets of space between defenders, dragging players out of position ... this is harder against teams that sit deep and flood the midfield Leeds have used Plan A a lot this season, but a number of times blown great opportunities because the ball wasn't getting to the wide men ... Huddersfield away is a great example where they were wide open but the space was never exploited effectively ... how we could do with a Batty who would win the ball and then make the pass Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I think I mentioned last week that my concerns week in and week out over team selection have constantly been proved wrong this season. I don't believe Pontus was injured, either way Monk told him he was on the bench, I would have started him and probably dropped Hernandez for Roofe so yes I would have changed it but that's me. I looked at Saturdays team sheet and wondered what Monk was thinking with the young pairing in the center of midfield but again, I was wrong and it worked. I've given up wondering who will start and who should. There are only two players this season that I really don't want to see in a Leeds shirt again, Barrow and Grimes so watch them perform wonders when they start against Newcastle
