It is time we replaced the House of Lords with a democratically elected body, get rid of the Peers who sit there (at our expense) just because their father was a Lord or because they are too old for the House of Commons or because they belong to a certain church...

and at least we may get a discussion on a major overhaul of the Second House?

Disagree. The house of lords is an amending chamber and therefore it shouldn't just be another elected house.
God forbid we end up with the American system where you get two years of one party controlling both houses and spend the next two years with different parties in charge in each house, effectively meaning that no decisions are taken.

The house of lords did a brilliant job yesterday.
Our unelected prime minister has no mandate and as far as I remember nobody voted for the hard Brexit (leave the single market) as it wasn't an option on the consultative referendum paper.

The very notion that somebody can be given the title 'lord' makes me ill.

The hard Brexit Vs Soft Brexit debate should be a separate issue from the Lords debate. Scrapping the first-past-the-post system would be a step towards a more democratic Britain IMO.

One step at a time Bill.... let's get a proper Second House first <ok>

£300 a day for say 200 days means that the Lords are picking up £60,000pa plus expenses and cheap/free food and Port!! This MUST stop and make these wasters answerable to the British people.

Absolutely agree, but when you get down to the nuts and bolts of changing it you get into a huge quagmire.

The fact you can buy them on groupon for £14 tells you all you need to know.

Great respect for anyone who turns down an honour, even Ted Heath(unless he turns out to be a paedophile).

I would agree about the separate debate.

But I suspect the Brexiteer that made the op was posting in a hissy fit because the lords made a very sensible amendment to the fatally flawed article 50 bill. The hectoring and bullying to stifle and dissent from the brexiteers and daily fail/express is obscene.
IMO we are being railroaded by the Tory right wing into a position the majority don't want. If we leave under the wrong terms then we will never get a chance to correct it.

We cannot be isolationist and we need to maintain and improve our levels of foreign trade. As an example, if anyone thinks Trump is going to let us into the American markets they need to give their head a shake. We are in a weak position to strike any deal and Trump will as he has stated will put America first.
