I was only speaking about John yesterday to someone who wanted to sell some maritime paintings and prints. He was concerned about being ripped off by auctioneers and I told him John would look after him. John organizes the Ex city players and he sends one across to the Airco for pre match interviews. He also does the OSC charity auctions.
& We had no idea how bad it was until we got back - that horrible realisation it could have been any of us at many grounds in those days ...
He was also the last amateur player to play in the professional game not only for us but probably the entire country. Not only play but score. The national Daily Mail did a write up a few years ago about the last amateur player to score in the professional game and they claimed it was an Orient player in the 1920's. I wrote and told them about John Hawley playing for Hull City, not once as an amateur but loads of times and scoring. To be fair they retracted the story and credited Hawley and City. His goal v Sunderland at Boothferry Park was a spectacular goal, quite special, and very memorable. John Hawley in his prime was a fabulous player.
