Off Topic Film remakes: are they all dreadful?

Man! There have been some truly dreadful remakes!

Wicker Man, with Nicolas Cage jumps immediately to mind.

Then again, practically every single one of the remakes that Hollywood has attempted of foreign movies has been bad: Rings, Get Carter, Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, Vanished, Battle Royale, The Grudge, Dark Waters, Pulse, The Eye, etc.

There have, of course, been plenty of terrible remakes of Hollywood's own movies: Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Invasion, Day Of The Dead, The Stepford Wives, The House On Haunted Hill, The Day The Earth Stood Still, etc.

There must, however, have been some good remakes?

I thought Dredd was better than Judge Dredd. Jeff Goldblum as The Fly was better than the 60s original. I also thought that John Carpenter's The Thing was better than the original The Thing From Another World.

Can you lads think of other dreadful remakes and any decent ones?

 

All the modern superhero remakes are terrible.

 

Alfie. Jude Law is no Michael Caine. Talking of Caine, the Italian job - a remake nothing like the original.

 

The Departed is excellent and in my view better than the Korean original.

Terrible remake on the Korean front - Oldboy.

 

Dredd is not a remake either, just another movie based on that character. Completely different story. But yes, Dredd is a decent watch, Judge Dress with Stallone is awful.

 

It was as though the Director and the other actor were kissng Sly's arse, rather than trying to make a decent movie.

 

A lot of movies around that time thought they could just get by with a star name attached, this was a classic example.

I think the older remakes have a better chance of being better. Some classics include..

The King & I
The Ten Commandments
Cape Fear

I think Scarface is a remake but not sure.

 

Manhunter was the first Hannibal Lecter film (Brian Cox playing Lecter) and was later remade as Red Dragon (the title of the book). The former is a far superior film IMHO, directed by Michael Mann with a mesmerising soundtrack (he also directed Last Of The Mohicans with similarly brilliant soundtrack).

The only real disappointment was the ending where the script strayed from the book - in Red Dragon they didn't.

Just my opinion of course.

 

I thought Cape Fear remake was a brilliant film

 

Seven Samurai
The Magnificent Seven (1960)
The Magnificent Seven (2016)

.... the first was virtually incomprehensible
... the second was an absolute classic - and what a fookin' soundtrack
... haven't seen the third yet but not sure why anyone would make a film that can't possibly match the original (second) ...

PS Actually loved Seven Samurai

Some are suggesting that this thread is, itself, a remake.

If it is, it blows the competition out of the water by a very long margin.

I own the DVD of the remake and watched it several times. Great movie. I like the fact that Robert Mitchem appeared as the cop.

 

And Gregory Peck as the attorney. Each aiding the opposite character to the one they played in the original. Great touch

 

Thought Cape Fear was one of the best films De Niro had done in many years. Maybe since Raging Bull (with the exception maybe of The Untouchables)

 

You didn't like Goodfellas?

Agree though Cape Fear was a class film. I loved the cinematography in that film as well. The camera work was brilliant.

 

What year was Goodfellas ? I thought Cape Fear came first ?
