As a response to the new English five pound note, which has Winston on it (surprise, surprise). Who actually decides these things ? Now we can design our own - if you were responsible for deciding who should appear on the reverse side of English/British banknotes who would you choose ? We can choose for the 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 notes - or alternatively, if you prefer the old Dutch idea of dispensing with dead people entirely in favour of wildlife scenes then you can do that as well.
In deference to the death of cockney English - here is their list: 5 Pounds - picture of Lady Godiva 10 Pound - Ayrton Senna, A mother hen, (or cock and hen), or Luciano Pavarotti. 20 Pound - Bobby Moore (score) 50 Pound - Jack Lord (origin obscure) - or the middle of a dartboard. 100 Pound - ??? 500 Pound - A picture of a monkey Here is my real list: 5 - A group of Bumble Bees (People should be reminded of their importance every day) 10 - Tolpuddle Martyrs (The other side of English history, which we should honour more often) 20 - Sophia Duleep Singh (we need ethnic representation, and, being a woman as well this satisfies both quotas) - one of the famous suffragettes. 50 - Edward Jenner (Medical - innoculations) 100 - someone arty like Hogarth - or maybe Thomas Hardy 500 - Sir Luther

This is difficult. 5 A cricket match on a village green. Sport 10 Daffodils on the banks of lake Windermere. Nature 20 Kings College Cambridge. Music 50 Clifton suspension bridge. Engineering 100 The Flying Scotsman. Transport Every time I come to England these days I have problems with the coins. To me they look like they have just come out of a fruit machine, but then I expect many would say the same about our various cents.
Don't mock it dave - Australia started using polymer notes nearly 30 years ago & they've been a huge success. Forgeries are almost a thing of the past now - and the notes have a far greater lifespan than the old paper ones. Not to mention that they're cleaner... The only thing I dislike about the new fivers is that they chose to put Churchill's face on them.
I thought that Scotland had their bank notes issued by the Bank of Inverknocky. Always seemed strange that the banks in England could treat them as foreign currency and charge you to have them paid into your account.
If I'm not mistaken, that actually breaches one of the Articles of the 1707 Act of Union. Hardly surprising though - the same Act covers "..two nations, both equal, both sovereign..."
