On the subject of user names, I used to be HCAFC (Kempton) but someone changed it to just Kempton. How do you do that?
Greaves was in a league of his own. Never appreciated how good he was at the time as he made it look so easy. Top scorer in Division one six times (at a time when forwards had lumps kicked off them on quagmires of pitches), more hat tricks for England than anyone else, a better scoring ratio for England hand anyone else who has played more than a handful of games. To put it into context no one had beaten Greaves record of 363 goals scored in one of the top 5 European Leagues until Ronaldo overtook him recently. And Ronaldo has played in better teams with more protection from referees. Ian St John said that Greaves was the only opposition player Bill Shankly singled out in team talks.
Saw Jimmy Greaves play for both Chelsea and Tottenham when I was in London in the 60's. Was one of my favourite English players. In his first match for Chelsea he played against Tottenham aged 17.
'We all agree,McKechnie is better than Yashin Waggy is better than Eusebio, and Swansea are in for a thrashing'. Forza CITY Allams OUT
I really liked the Ben Burgess and Danny Allsopp partnership. They seemed to score for fun that season and would have done more had Burgess not had that injury. More recently, Long and Jelavic for a brief time looked like they could have been an effective pairing for the top flight.
I haven't seen a more instinctive goal scorer than Edwards at City. He scored goals effortlessly without breaking sweat, but he was a lazy bugger.
Seen all the ones mentioned play apart from Ackerman and Bradbury.. Chilton was the best in the air and the bravest. Payton was the fastest. Windass had the quickest feet and brain. Pearson was the most hard working. But for pure goalscoring instinct, when you get one chance in a game and when the rest of the team are not up to much, it's Keithy.
If your job is to score goals and you do then that is better than a grafter would doesn't. Other harder working team mates can take comfort in their win bonuses.
Not always. Edwards scored prolifically from the few chances he received, yet Mutrie was still a very good goal scorer, but he also worked hard to create chances for himself and the rest of the team. It's hard to compare strikers without comparing the quality of the teams that gave them service.
Remember seeing Mutrie for Blyth at Elland Rd and thinking "Who is this arrogant lanky old non league bastard taking the piss against us, holding it up with his back to the goal in our box ??" He doesn't make the Top 5 in this thread but there have been times this season and other recent ones in the PL when you remember Les and think "He could do better than these, he could hold it up, the ball would stick" etc
