The rumours surrounding the potential transfer of Mauro Zarate are gathering pace in Italy, with reports that Sunderland have opened talks over a loan deal, and the player himself determined to leave the Rome side.
Reputable Rome newspaper Il Tempo claiming Sunderland are now in negotiations with Lazio over a loan move through to the end of the season, with a 7m Euro option to buy.
This follows up nicely what Il Messeggaro said yesterday which was exactly the same, with a similar fee. The only difference is of course that Tempo claim talks have begun.
    The player himself, or rather his agent, seems absolutely adamant his client will leave Lazio sooner rather than later, and a deal could be done in the next few days. Earlier this week Luis Ruzzi said;
The war has begun, and our position is clear.
To discuss with Claudio Lotito [Lazio President] is very difficult. He did not understand that he broke a jewel, he still thinks it's worth a lot.
We give him five days to review things, otherwise he [Zarate] will go. Too bad for him.
Things will move by the end of the transfer window.
From the date these quotes first appeared, five days are almost up, so it wouldn't be unexpected to see something potentially happen over this weekend's break (for us anyway).
Zarate is an interesting prospect. According to all reports his attitude absolutely stinks and he wouldn't fit in well to a team that relies on hard work. On the other hand, Martin O'Neill could see him as a project he can turn around. At the end of it all, if it's not working then he doesn't have to buy him.
When it comes to Zarate one thing is sure. The risks and rewards of any transfer are both incredibly high.

    Very concerning!

I think O'Neill likes that and has a decent track record with misfits

Low risk in my opinion, which whether you like loans or not this is one advantage of them with a sort of "try before you buy" period.

If Mon could get the best out of him he'd be a terrific signing till the end of age year. The only way I see him coming here is to put himself in the shop window for the summer. If he works hard and helps us finish top half I have no problem with that at all

Great prospect for us. Bags of talent but putting it to use is the boss's problem. I'd like to see this lad playing for us. (not just with us) Hope it comes off.

Where would he play - is he going to be the fabled second striker?

Agreed mate, very little downside. If he proves himself and then wants to stay, sign him up

Flair players generally come with baggage.

Plodders are no trouble but offer little in the way of creativity

Occasionally you have to take a gamble.

This one has little risk for both parties and would be worth taking imo. The lad looks to have more tricks than a room full of harry redknapps.

Talking of which, maybe the echo has been employed to throw arry of the trail. :D

Dump Sess? Get our money for him... he's a great player but so was Steed. Causes panic but no end product.

Lazio valued him at something like £150m at one point!

With all due respect, that's a fall that even Felix Baumgartner would be proud of!

I disagree, Sess is fantastic and he does offer a threat, unlike Steed, he scores goals (not as many as he should) and creates plenty of chances and goals, selling Sess would leave our team even more drained of pace. And about Zarates end product, he's scored 12 goals in 67 apps for Lazio. Sess has scored 13 in 66 apps for us... not much difference

Possibly, but then when you see he plays for one of the top teams in Italy and sess is playing for us then maybe that evens it out?

Still hope he comes. Exciting players are what everybody wants to see and we'll have our share then.
