Ermm, okay Defoe... He probably shouldn't have been given that England press conference, more questions about Spurs and AVB than the game but he made sure he got that cracker in when he got the chance He certainly seems to think the new contract has insured he has a future with us and says he's enjoying playing upfront on his own(we're not! ).
Don't worry. As soon as Ade gets his first start and shows AVB what he's been missing, Defoe will be relegated back to the bench.
Going on the evidence on the pitch I would say no. But its not really his fault, he is being asked to play in a role that is not his best. Its also hard for Bale & Lennon as their ball would have to be perfect for it to find defoe's head.
Hard to say when he was at his best for us, can't ever remember him forming any sort of partnership with anybody up front; Always the bit part player/impact sub.. maybe his best time was at Portsmouth with Crouch.... has anybody got Tony Pullis on speed dial?
To be fair he came across as a mature, astute guy for the most part which is surprising considering the nonsense he gets up to according to the Sun and his troubles with the offside rule. If he can turn talking a good game into actual performances he'll win us a lot of points this season.
09/10 season, Chirpy? Paired with Crouch, scored 24 goals, including the 5 against Wigan and we finished 4th.
The BBC web-site has him quoted as saying "Patience is going to be the key and it will help if we can get an early goal" which sounds a bit less barmy. I'm starting to hope that with some good coaching he might be more suited to the AVB system than we think. If the 4231 or 433 allows him close support and we pass it on the ground a lot then some of his weaknesses will be less important.
Appreciate that he shouldn't be played as the sole fwd, but there are other things which really piss me off about JD. 1. He is just toooooo selfish - never looks up to see a teammate in a better position and shoots from the most ridiculous places. (yes, I know he passed to Moussa on Saturday but even he wouldn't shoot from the corner flag, would he?) 2. His failure to time runs into the box to get on the end of Bale crosses. We missed out on a couple of golden opportunities in the first half v Norwich where he was just too slow to either see the opportunity or to slow to make it. And the most obvious example of this was the infamous chance v Citeh....
Relayer - the number 1 annoyance with Defoe, as previously mentioned (lots) has to be his inability to grasp the offside rule. The guy has gas, he doesn't need to be 5 yards offside as well.
the guy is trying to be positive.........i like him...even though he pisses me off....but as HIAG said..it is only a matter of time before he is a benchwarmer for us.....Ade brings a whole new dimension to our play.
You trust a journo over me?! To be fair, I suppose I am the one doing all the misquoting and twisting his words
Homer, looking at a map: "So there's a NEW Mexico!" Wouldn't be so funny if most Americans didn't think New Mexico is a foreign country. To be fair, Santa Fe has as old a culture as you can find in this country (other than the non-immigrants, of course) and is well worth seeing. I spent a great night there myself. Not that I prefer it to Old Mexico. I actually hope Defoe reprises last year's role. Not a starter but nearly 20 goals. I know he's offside way too much, but there aren't too many players who'll score more.
