At last, someone on my wavelength. Once a few of these scum have been taken out - permanently - the rest will fade back to their sewers. Give the police/army a shoot on sight mandate. If you are rioting/looting you are fair game. And bring back troops from Afghanistan to deal with it, why the hell are we policing another country when ours is so messed up? Also agree that the silent majority should sort the scum out if the authorities cant. Put me down for duty if it kicks off in Winchester (yeah, like that will ever happen!) Failing all that, get David Cameron to make a strong statement on TV, that should sort it. Now I'm just being silly!!
I'm staggered by how keen people seem to be to live in a police state. Shoot on sight, army on the streets...oh my good god!!!!!
Do not believe the Murdoch/ Tory media. Riots happen because something is wrong in society. Of course the Tories want you to believe it is 'mindless thugs' because it gets them off the hook for creating conditions in which people riot not just in the 80s but in 2011 too!!!
Of course, none of this provides an excuse for people to go out on the street and destroy people's jobs, homes and property. However people need to think a little bit more deeply about why kids all over the country would get involved in this. It is not just the usual suspects, it is kids who have no hope of furthering their lives through normal means because their education and neighbourhoods are being slashed to ensure that the bankers who created the problem in the first place can have their nice big bonuses back again.

Disagree. To blame the cuts on mindless actions is wide of the mark. If this was a protest by youths then why are they attacking innocent folk's shops and business' rather than council HQ's? Some of the people doing it are 9,10 and 11. They don't know about govt. cuts etc. Even if they aren't happy with their prospects, how do they think looting and violence is the answer to boos their future? Youths have to take responsibility for this.
Young people in this country can have a future if they focus and work hard. They can succeed if they're good enough. These aren't riots to protest, these are riots for riots sake which come from ill discipline and the gang culture that has developed in the UK whereby youths think it's good to destroy to boost their reputation.
However, shooting live's isn't the answer either. We don't want to kill these people, we want them punished and their culture reformed.
My job is to educate and control the kind of young man who is likely to be ringleaders in this kind of thing. Some of the young men I deal with are physically large and have a record of violence. It can be done by being sensitive to the reasons they behave like they do when appropriate and also by physically restraining them when this become necessary. I work with abuse, threats and violence.
The point is...a measured response works most of the time. Consistently enforced boundaries little by little work to encourage young people to face up to their behaviour and make changes which will enable them to live within society.
Unfortunately, most educational settings do not have the resources or training to deal with behavioural issues in the way my colleagues and I are able to. And sadly, many parents have no intention of or give up too easily on enforcing consistent boundaries.
Spending cuts will most certainly impact on local authorities ability to offer services like I provide. Furthermore, eroding young people's futures by cutting education generally and pricing them out of further education leads to a situation where the very bad kids can lead some potentially good kids down the wrong road.
I think I talk about this with some expertise and another thing...all you tough talkers need to consider this...

This is the first message of real sense! Come on now...shoot the children??? really??? If you think its acceptable to shoot at an 11 year old kid for stealing a tv then i would hate to think what punishment you would give to someone who uses violence against another purely because of the football team they support or worse still an MP who swindles £50,000+ in tax rebates???
Lets get things in perspective here. Rioting has happenend in every decade...the major difference being that the media allows it to be more accessible these days! You have to address the root of the problem - i.e. why are they burning/looting/anti police? Lack of job opportunities, living in run down depraved areas, racial segragation are some of the reasons. You dont see a wealthy lawyer burning down houses because he is quite content with life. It is very easy for us to sit in our ivory towers and throw down damming sentences on these kids! Now there are no excuses for there acts - but they should be punished to the extent the law seems reasoanble. But rehabiliation from ground up is what is needed. A bit of common sense wouldnt go a miss with all the media frenzy band wagon.

There's a lot of anger going around and it's probably pretty justified. But surely it's important to stay as calm as possible and not do or say anything which you may regret later.

It's very commendable what you do and you probably have more experience than me in this field but I am a teacher and have had to deal with situations in which young people have committed wrongdoing. From my experience, the main we try and do is give a sense of responsibility and, whilst empathising with their reasons, get them to understand that they and they alone are responsible for their actions.
That's what I think needs to happen here and my point was thus. We need to get these people to understand that they're responsible for the riots and not government cuts and then work with them to identify the best solution - obviously not shooting them but getting them to reform. For the major offenders, I think prison will probably be the answer.

Thank you for that but I wasn't actually looking for any commendation for what I do. I do it because I am reasonably good at it and I enjoy it. I did find people's tough talk pretty galling considering several of my colleagues have been hospitalised in the last year.
Of course everything is down to personal responsibility but I strongly believe that if you put people in desperate situations then they are likely to act desperately, hence the government cuts surely must be a big factor in my opinion.
But while I strongly believe societal reasons lie behind the riots, the motivations of individual rioters are probably many and varied. The participation of many young people who would not normally be involved has to be a huge concern for all though.
