and gets signed up as a professional for let's say DQPR (but any club would do). The question is, could/would you end up following your son and supporting them or would you carry on going to City?
I remember on my first date with the mrs I had to explain that I dont like Rugby, and that if and when we got together she would have to accept Hull City into her life...shes Manc so took some doing.
I'd do both. My youngest is a cracking left-back but he isn't good enough to get into any academy (although one of the lads at his school has just joined United's academy). I take him all over the place to play for his team, and I cheer him and the team on wherever I go. That would be the same if he joined ANY academy (Yes, even TWS). But that would end if he weren't in the team. At the same time both my sons have now been fully indoctrinated into supporting City, so there's a nice divide between the team you play for (or your son(s) play for) and the team you have been brought up with. There's no conflict in my mind. Would hate it if he were good enough to join TWS tho, nasty, dirty people!!
He could just use them as a spring board to make it pro, and then leave for City once he's established. A bit like all those Brum supporting players that started off at Villa and moved to Birmingham after making it. The same applies to Rovers/FC I believe.
Similar views here. I'd still be a City fan, and when ever they weren't in competition with City it'd be easy to support his team as well. When it came to them being in competition with us I'd be hoping he had MOTM performances every week but that we finished above them and decided to sign him. I suspect it's a moot point with me though, I haven't even had kids yet, and when I do there's a good chance they'll be Scottish so they won't have a chance of being good enough. On the plus side there's no dilemma over trying to get them to support City over their local team (which I'll encourage them to do with their friends), living in a foreign league there's nothing wrong with them supporting both as we're not in competition.
My lad plays for Scunthorpe and I follow him all over I think you have to. It breaks my heart to take him training and to matches with the scunny badge on all his gear but he enjoys playing for them but he also jumped all over at Glamford park when we put 5 past them. The main thing is hes a City nut always will be I think once you love a club thats it Rooney still supports Everton.
