Which 11 players would you pick in your favourite all-time Swans team? Not necessarily the "best" players but your personal favourites. Mine would be: 1. Tony Millington 2. Wyndham Evans 3. Danny Bartley 4. Herbie Williams 5. Mel Nurse 6. Garry Monk 7. Len Allchurch 8. Robbie James 9. Dai Gwyther 10. Ivor Allchurch 11. Scott Sinclair
Yep - I had to find a place for Herbie ! What is wrong with Danny Bartley? I almost picked Vic Gomersall !!
Now Vic was a heck of a full-back. I played with him when he was in the Welsh League - he scared the crap out of me when he was on my team.
I refer my friend to the same answer I gave on 606 *********** Roger Freestone ********** *John Salako*** Tommy Smith **Cookie Coleman ****** *********** Jan Molby ************** **** Robbie James ****** Frank Lampard ********* Alan Curtis **** Ivor Allchurch ********** Cliff Jones ************ John Charles************* however i did throw Alan Knill as a ringer in my original selection on 606! These guys have all played for Swansea at some time in their career (youth onwards), maybe not at their peak..... but if they had WHAT A TEAM!!!!! PS Big John did play for Swansea at some point in his career as a footballer, without him it's Bob Latchford if you want to split hairs.
I can assure you big john charles never ever played for swansea, he played schoolboy football that had nothing to do with swansea town at the time..
Roger Freestone Angel Rangel - Mel Nurse - Mel Charles - Hadziabdic Robbie James - Ian Callaghan Alan Curtis - Ivor Allchurch - Cliff Jones John Charles
Hhmm - I'm just gonna go for the best players that I have seen playing for the Swans (since about '94/'95)... and I'm gonna go for favourite players rather than just best... and players who played for us outside of the top two flights... GK - Freestone - gotta love that guy. A great stopper - a shame that he had only a brief go at the prem with Chelsea. Did get a cap for Wales and did well but he really could have had a good go at the top fight/championship. LB - Ricketts just beats out Taylor. CB - Williams - the best centre half for us since Melville and Coleman. CB - Monk beats out fellow Southampton alumni Matt Bound. RB - Rangel - what this guy was doing playing sem-pro in Spain is anyone's guess... Steve Jenkins would prob come second but his crossing was a little iffy. CM - John Cornforth - a great range of passing just a pity he had no pace! Just beats Roberto Martinez - a great player - very similar to Cornforth. CM - Leon Britton - just beats fat Frank Lampard (seeing as he only played a couple of months for us!) RW - Jason Bowen - a good tricky winger that lit up the rather dour mid-90s for us. beats Andy Robinson as Robbo lost his mind and went to Leeds! LM - Jon Coates - more midfield than wing. CF - Trundle - I still impress English friends by showing videos of him at his peak. A real pity he didn't stick by us (and that he had a lack of pace). But a great player. - better than Scotland. CF - James Thomas - what a pity that his career was curtailed by injury. A good all-round striker, young enough to have improved as we made our way up the divisions. But, most importantly, he saved the club with his hat-trick against Hull.
f***ng hell dai. it was obviously a tenous link due to the 'youth' policy in my squad.... but if you must split hairs then schoolboys. He was part of the swansea set up final! sorry to have rattled your very delicate cage!
sorry he was not part of swansea town and never played ..FACT so how the hell can you have him in swansea's all time favorite team ..
Charles joined the boys section of the local team Swansea Town, who later became Swansea City. When he left school at age 14, he was taken onto the groundstaff at Vetch Field, yet because of his young age; Third Division Swansea never gave him a first-team call up. His only senior appearances came for the reserve side in the Welsh Football League. That qualifies as good enough for my dream team Dai.... it's only a bit of fun ! Take a chill pill.
but he never played for the swans, its well documented so why include a player that never played ????? you can name who you like but its pointless if you name players that never put on a swansea shirt and played dont you think..
tony millington angel rangel herbie williams ashley williams alan tate nathan dyer joe allen robbie james len allchurch john toshack alan curtis subs roger freestone leon britton jeremy charles bob latchford steve dobbie andy legg jan molby dai its a bit of fun noticed you havent posted your team FACT
I can only name a team properly from 04/05. So i'll give it a shot GK - De Vries - Really was a fantastic player for us. He made some incredilbe saves, and had a good relationship with the fans. He loved it when we sang his name, and would always do his best to wind up the away fans. Good keeper - will be missed! RB - Angel Rangel - It has to be him, quality footballer! CB - Garry Monk - He is a true team leader, and was one of my top players last season (as most of you know ) CB - Dennis Lawrence - When I found out we had signed Lawrence, I was so happy. I'm pretty sure the first time I realised we had him was when I got to a game late, and he was in the starting line up - one of my all time favourite players (rhysj1 - Lawrences biggest fan for the those of you who remember) LB - Alan Tate - It has to be him. I considered Tom williams (great cross), Bessone, Painter, O Haloran, Richard Duffy, sylvan melsien haha, And big Kevin Austin (who came a close second) But Tate has to be the man who is most liked and a Swans Legend! RW - Britton - I was going to chose Paul Anderson, but the way in which he left and chose Forest over us. Leon tearing up the right wing was a great sight! CM - Bodde - A world class player who is a joy to watch on the field CM - Joe Allen - come up through the ranks, and a real work horse. improves all the time. A jack Bar-steward! LM - Andy Robinson - Played a lot of good games for us, did have a good relationship with the fans, left in bad circumstances. AM - Guillem Bauza - Really likeable player, worked really hard for the team. And very unselfish. Loved by the fans, just didn't have the greatest quality all the time CF - Rory Fallon!!! - What a player! He comes in at Number 2 on my all time list of favourites. That bicycle kick against Barnsley was incredible!
Can only go for players I've seen I reckon. Mostly gone for players who had a real affinity to the club. GK - Roger Freestone - Not the best (that would be de Vries most likely) but a player who was far better than our level of football at the time yet never questioned leaving because he loved the club. Great guy, good keeper, good penalty taker too . RB - Angel Rangel - One of the best technical players we have had, he and Bodde sum up our recent transfer policies to a tee. LB - Sam Ricketts - Close between him, Howard and Tate but he is clearly the better footballer. CB - Ashley Williams - Best CB we have had since we were last in the top division most likely. CB - Matty Bound - Could have been Garry Monk or Jason Smith also as all three of them were fantastic leaders and tough characters. CM - Joe Allen - Proper local hero for the next 15 years. CM - Martin Thomas - I should really pick Britton or Bodde here but Martin's goal against West Ham in 1999 (or more the atmosphere of the game) was the moment that sealed my support of the Swans from being something I did because my Granddad took me to matches to being something that burned inside me and will never go away. AM (and Captain) - John Cornforth - Awesome guy who epitomised everything good about our club at the time. RW - Stuart Roberts - Was the Nathan Dyer of his day for us, still can't believe he didn't go on to better things. LW - Scott Sinclair - Best player in 25 years. ST - Lee Trundle - Stupidly talented for our level at the time, I firmly believe that he was good enough for premier league football with the right club.
01 De Vries 02 Williams 05 Tate 16 Monk 22 Rangel 12 Dyer 21 Sinclair 24 Allen (Moore 89) 37 Britton (Gower 77 ) 14 Dobbie (Pratley 55) 15 Borini Think that makes it quite clear !!! (the sub times may give it away!!) Seriously though , any all time X1 IN MY OPINION must include the following: The late great Robbie James The magestic Alan Curtis in his prime. The greatest swansea city player of all time - Ivor Allchurch Just for that tackle on Ozzie - Tommy Smith and special mention for the following: For heroic Services rendered above and beyond the call of duty - Gary Monks outstretched right foot at WEM_BER_LEY For dodgy services rendered above and beyond the call of duty - Alan Tates arms/ elbows / hands (when not in direct sight of officials within penalty area!) I also had as a favorite player back in early 80's Jimmy ( I can still spell his surname correctly after all these years without looking it up, but still can't pronounce his first name right) and Ante....remember them!
