STEVE Davis has hinted that Crewe Alex are now in negotiations with Sunderland over a deal for striker Max Clayton.

The 19-year-old, who is out of contract, is now into a fourth week of a twice-extended trial with the Black Cats - on the face of it an indecisive move by the Premier League outfit.

But Alex manager Davis said today that there are ongoing talks between the clubs.

He said: "It's very difficult for me to talk about it at the moment because I'm not too sure of the situation. It's been left in the hands of John (Bowler) and everyone else at the club from an administration point of view.

"As far as I know they are still negotiating with Sunderland. That's as much as I can say at the moment."

Nantwich-based Clayton has long made it clear he wishes to leave Crewe. He was first offered a contract extension almost two years ago but has never shown any inclination to sign it.

But due to his age he cannot simply walk away – the Railwaymen are due compensation from his next club. And due to his impressive CV and long-talked about potential, that could be a substantial amount.

Homegrown star Clayton, an England youth international who has played almost 100 times for Crewe and twice contributed to triumphs at Wembley, has attracted the interest of Premier League clubs in the past.

Believe he has been playing with Fletch in some of the games?

Sounded like he fitted right in to be fair to the lad

Might become an integral part of the development squad?

Looking like the extensions haven't been to keep looking, more that we are trying to do a deal and wanna keep him at the club in the meantime.
