QPRYoung rules out England return Luke Young says not even a new lease of life at QPR would make him reconsider his international retirement. Young told the FA in 2009 that he no longer wished to be considered for England selection and later rejected a chance to reverse that decision when he was approached following an injury to Glen Johnson. And while fellow recent signings Joey Barton, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jay Bothroyd are keen to force their way back into the England reckoning, Young has no ambitions to add to his seven caps. Young said: âThatâs it for me. Iâm 32 now and with the emergence of players like Chris Smalling I think itâs someone elseâs time now â time for a couple of other players to make the [right-back] position their own. âItâs great to represent your country and I enjoyed the times I was given an opportunity, but for the last couple of years I was involved with England I felt like I was making up the numbers. I wasnât really pushing anyone for a start. âI made the decision to stand down from it and give a chance to a couple of younger players who could get the experience.â Young has also been reluctant to be a bit-part player at club level. A year ago he turned down a move to Liverpool in order to remain a first-team regular at Aston Villa, who sold him to QPR ahead of last weekâs transfer deadline. He explained: âAt Liverpool I would have been cover for the full-backs on both sides. I just felt I was at the age where I didnât want to go somewhere Iâd be looked at as cover. âI would have played a fair share of games as Glen Johnson had a few injuries. But at the time I felt I had more chance of starting matches at Villa.â iReader
I always respect the players that realise their time is short and just want to play and get the most out of what is, essentially, a short career but a great opportunity to do what every kid around the country dreams about. Humble footballers are very refreshing.
A modern footballer that wants to play every week, very refreshing. He probably cleans his own boots too.
Is he insane - it's only a short career and he should grab as much cash as he can in the shortest space of time possible, this guy seems to actually want to play football - what a joker. When his career is finished and he sits down to count his pennies he will think - I wish i hadn't wasted my career actually playing i could have signed for some other clubs not played at all and had some more pennies. All these great memories of playing a sport i love - are worth nothing really, what an idiot i have been. He'll never play for Man City with an attitude like this, Owen Hargreaves must think he's a right dick.
