When a player dives he's "cheating" yet when a player cynically fouls someone as the team is on a break he's making a "clever tackle" and it's commended.

It's wierd though. I come from a rugby playing family, we all support football teams but theres still an over-use of words like **** whenever we watch football games. In rugby 'cheating' or diliberatly breaking the rules and trying not to get caught is just part of the game, and we all agree that in serious competative games (I've never played for a particully high level but still) it's worth doing anything to win including these cynical fouls. If you get a red or yellolw card then fair enough thats your punishment but you've saved your team

The thing which I don't understand is that surely it should be classed as a 'professional foul', half the time the player doesn't even attempt to play the ball, so should be a straight red. Will never happen though...you can't even put in a strong challenge now without it being a red, so adding another foul as a red would ruin the game more, but still...

Aye that's very true actually...Digging in an elbow and going in with the knee in a ruck is just seen as being 'a bit tricky' ... Yet in football we'd be up in arms! Having said that, if opposition rugby players behaved in line outs like footy players do at corners (i.e. grabbing, pushing, pulling) then they'd be going mental...I guess every discipline is different!

The global thread grinds my gears. Why wont it piss off?

Also I believe the modern game isnt lenient enough with hard tackles, look at Tiote v Stevenage, fantastic tackle and today is a red card offence. I couldnt believe today when Flamini got booked either, dont like where football's going, to Wenger's hypocritical ideas of tackling.

No doubt about it, tackling is going out of the game. In my sunday league team, you can go in 2 footed and most of the time there won't be a complaint from anyone, normally just encouragement <laugh>

Smudger...That's surely down to money as well?

With players worths now exceeding £50m and with success and failure being of a similar amount of money again, football teams can't afford to lose players to bad challenges!

True, money pretty much run football nowadays, but if you've won the ball without intent to hurt the guy, whats the problem?

And people like Torres arent even worth close to 50mil, even in footballing terms. Anyway, Chelsea probably wouldnt miss him in this kind of form. (Assuming you were talking about Torres.)

I think when a play makes a hard challenge it shows that they are determined! It gets the crowd going and also gets the other player on the pitch going. I don't see a problem in getting the ball and the man. I love it when I make a challenge like that, You just get up with a smirk on your face and the opposing player may well be scared to run at you the rest of the match then. Its becoming a bit of a joke.
