What odds you get? They're going at 22-1 with William Hill. That would be a nice return of £1540 Of course, they have to go on and it too but I suspect they will be on a flight home tomorrow
Before last Wednesday I wanted Holland to get through but then I found out I'd drew Portugal in the sweepstake
Help me out here.If the dutch win tonight it would give them 3 points, the same total as Portugal and Denmark(if the Danes lose to the Germans as expected). The dutch would therefore be above Portugal on the head to head but having been beaten by the danes how can the dutch qualify?
Portugal also beat Denmark so its like a little triangle, each team should be above one but below another. It means that if all three end on three points then H2H is ignored and it goes to goal difference. If all three end on three points, Denmark will be guaranteed to be out as they will have a worse goal difference than one of the others. If Holland beat Portugal 1-0 then both they and Portugal would have a goal difference of -1 meaning Portugal would go through on goals scored (having scored three against the Danes) Hope that helps
It goes down to superior goal difference in the games between those 3 sides. So take away all their results agaisnt Germany and Hollad currently have -2 but would go to at least -1 and possibly higher with a win tonight. Portugal's is currently plus 1 but would go to at least 0 and possibly lower by losing. Denmark's is currrently 0 and won't change as they have already played against Holland & Portugal. If Holland win by 2 goals I believe they go through and if they win by 1 goal then I believe Portugal will go through based on the highest amount of goals scored (3 against Denmark gives them the advantage). If Denmark win 3-2 then Portugal's can't go through even if they win as the same principal will apply to Germany, Denmark & Portugal who will all have 6 points. Confused mucuh?
You got there before me! It's very confusing though, goal difference would make things a lot simpler.
Yeah,it seems an over complicated system when goal diff. would appear to be a simpler choice. Thanks for the help people!
The good news is that after Tuesday, this rule no longer matters. Straight knockout games are much more exciting too
I think in a league season it makes sense as it means results against your direct competition are crucial and a couple of big wins against relegated teams don't skew your goal difference. But in a group of 4 teams where it's easy for 3 or all 4 teams to end up on the same points it would be a lot easier to use goal difference.
I'm sure Barcelona lost a La liga title about 3 or 4 or 5 years ago on the head to head. Actually finished above Real M on goal diff.(same points) but lost out on head to head
But surely, in football, you want to see lots of goals...? Why only encourage teams to beat their direct opposition when you can encourage them to try and score lots of goals throughout the season by using goal difference as the prime separator..? Although, having read this I think it makes sense in a league were it is a two horse race too...
