I could easily be shamed about the period of British Rule of India, (formally 1857 to 1947, informally add at least 100 years). Hard as the faults of Empire are to accept, I can't help wondering how much worse India might be today without British influence, flawed as it was.
Nepal as well. Women die as they have to sleep outside in huts in freezing temperatures when they have a period.
