RONNY DEILA blames Celtic’s Champions League walloping in Warsaw on an exhausting schedule of pre-season friendlies.
The Norwegian has spent the last seven days agonising over the capitulation that saw Scotland’s champions crash to a 4-1 thrashing in the Pepsi Arena – a result that has left their hopes of another £20million UEFA jackpot hanging in the balance.
On Wednesday at Murrayfield Deila will send his team out against Legia Warsaw in a last-ditch bid to repair the damage and salvage a place in the final round of qualifiers.
But he’s already told chief executive Peter Lawwell never again to expose the players to the kind of punishing summer programme that has already seen them travel to Austria, Germany (twice), Iceland, Poland and Finland in the space of five weeks.
And yesterday Deila insisted preparations for crunch qualifying matches must be prioritised ahead of money-making tours.
He said: “Next year it’s going to be totally different. The other teams from England who are away are not playing Champions League qualifiers.
“Of course, we can do both but it has to be a decision taken together with the manager. The last one, Neil Lennon, maybe thought differently. But for me, I want it more relaxed.
“I want to train without travelling too much on long journeys to play matches. It’s an important thing. For four weeks you need to prepare well.
“I speak with Peter Lawwell all the time. With this, something was put together and we had to go through the programme. But next year I will be more involved. And I will think it’s better for us to do things differently.”

Deila believes his team displayed clear signs of travel fatigue during last week’s heavy defeat and acted quickly to demand almost all of his top team squad was spared from a weekend trip to Helsinki to face Spurs.
He said: “The performance was down to many things. The players wanted to impress the new manager. They also have to get used to new orders and being told to do different things. That takes time.
“But there has also been a lot of travelling and that also takes a lot of energy when you have only two days home, then go away, two days home then go away. When you do this all the time you miss some things.
“We did something about that when we kept the players home from the Tottenham game so they could prepare well.”
Deila put his squad through their paces at Murrayfield yesterday – with the surprise inclusion of James Forrest.
He added: “I’m confident we can turn things around because the
problems in the first game are easy things to do something about.
“If they were difficult to fix then I would have more problems.”
And asked if he expects the extra rest will bring the best out in his players in tonight’s return Deila was emphatic. He said: “Yes, it will.”

The lack of competitive matches was the biggest contributing factor to our performance. Our players looked like it was the first time they had played together.

Both players have an option to buy if they do well on loan.

If they do that well they might decide against selling

The "option" - as in the case of Fraser Forster when we got him from Newcastle - would be in Celtic's favour.

Loans can be a good option even if they work out to be short term.

They could bridge a gap until a permanent signing can be found or a youth player gets ready to step in. Or to get a player beyond your means for a short time to achieve your season target i.e. win the league. You should have a plan of what to do after the loan and not be back to square one when it ends, to much short term planning would be a disaster.

They shouldn't be used as an extended trial although the Forster one seems to disprove that.
